This painting "Scream" was created in 1893, and it is a famous print work that established Munch's position as a master of expressionism. Existing in the National Art Museum in Oslo, Norway.
The sky and clouds in the picture are as red as blood. A skeleton-like man stood on the bridge, headless and tailless, twisting his body, staring at the front, holding his head tightly with his hands and covering his ears, like a frightened bird, terrified, emotional and screaming loudly.
The whole work gives people a sense of desolation and terror. After seeing this painting, everyone can't help wondering, why does this person scream? Why is he so scared?
This is not a real person, but an abstract person, just like a person's "soul". Especially compared with the latter two who walk normally, we can feel that this "he" is completely out of this world.
Why create such disturbing works? Monk himself described it this way: "Nice,1892 65438+1October 22nd, I was walking on the avenue with two friends. The sun went down and the sky suddenly turned red. I seem to feel a kind of sadness and melancholy. I stopped and leaned gently against the fence. Extreme fatigue suffocated me. Burning clouds are like blood, like swords. They cover the blue-black Norwegian bays and towns. My friend, he kept walking, but I just stood there, trembling with anxiety. I feel as if I was shaken by a loud and persistent scream ...?
The figure in the foreground is monk himself. He painted this painting for a long time, due to a series of family misfortunes (one sister died; A sister got schizophrenia, and later her father died), and the pent-up gas broke out in her heart. Through his paintings, he vented what everyone could not bear: alienation, loneliness, anxiety and confusion.
This kind of cry can be the cry in everyone's heart.
