Brief Introduction to Flowers in the Morning and Picking Up in the Evening

This book is a collection of Lu Xun's 1926' s reminiscence essays, with ten articles in total. The first five articles were written in Beijing and the last five in Xiamen. Originally published in the semi-monthly Mangyuan, the general title was "Reviving the past". 1927 July, Lu Xun re-edited it in Guangzhou, and added "introduction" and "postscript", renamed it "Morning Flowers". 1928 September was first published by Beijing Weiming Society and listed as one of the "unnamed new collections" compiled by the author. 1reprinted in February, 929. 1September, 932, the third edition was rearranged and published by Shanghai North New Bookstore. The cover of this book was painted by Tao.

These ten essays are Memoirs of Memories (Preface to Three Leisure Collections), which completely record Lu Xun's life track and experience from childhood to youth, vividly depict the life picture of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and are important artistic documents for studying Lu Xun's early thoughts and life and even the society at that time. These chapters are profound and meaningful, and they are classics in China's modern prose.

Regarding the translation of this book, Lu Xun said in a letter to Masuda on April 1934 1 1: "If there is a place for publication, it is good to translate it, but there are too many customs and trivial things about China, which are not easy to understand without annotations, and it is also boring to read with too many annotations." In his letter to Masuda on February 2 1934/KLOC-0, Lu Xun mentioned that Masuda and Haruko Sato jointly translated Selected Works of Lu Xun, saying, "Only Mr. Fujino, please translate and supplement. Fan Ainong writes badly, so it is better to give up what he loves. "

From "Hundred Herbs Garden" to "San Tan Yin Yue", Mr. Fujino, Fan Ainong and other articles in the book were selected into middle school Chinese textbooks.

Remembering Zhou Shuren Jun.

Fujino Genkuro

Lu Xun wrote a famous essay "Mr. Fujino", recalling his teacher Mr. Fujino when he was studying in Sendai Medical College, Japan. (Mr. Fujino was originally published in the semi-monthly magazine Mangyuan (1926 12 10). After Lu Xun's death, Mr. Fujino also wrote an article recalling Lu Xun, which was published in the March issue of Literary Cases in the twelfth year of Showa (1937). The following is a translation of this article.

Because it was many years ago, my memory is not very clear. But what I can confirm is that I transferred from Aichi Medical College to Sendai Medical College at the end of Meiji thirty-four years (190 1). Two or three years later, Zhou Shuren Jun entered Sendai Medical College as the first international student from China. Because I am an international student, I don't need to take the entrance exam. Zhou Shuren attends classes with about 100 freshmen and more than 30 repeat students.

Zhou Jun is short, round face and looks smart. I remember that Zhou Jun was in poor health, his face was unhealthy and he was still bloody. I gave a lecture on human anatomy at that time. Although Zhou Jun takes notes carefully in class, it may be very difficult for him to learn from the fact that he can't fully listen to and speak Japanese when he enters school.

So I stayed after class, looked at Zhou Jun's notes and corrected Zhou Jun's omissions and mistakes. If he were in Tokyo, there would probably be many overseas students in Zhou Jun, but in Sendai, he must be lonely because Zhou Jun is the only supporter. However, Zhou Jun didn't make people feel lonely, except that he worked hard in class.

If you keep the records at that time, you will know Zhou Jun's achievements. Unfortunately, there is no record left now. As far as I remember, Zhou Jun is not an excellent student.

At that time, I bought a house in Kongjue Street in Sendai. Although Zhou Jun also came to my house to play, he didn't have a special impression. If the dead wife is still alive, maybe she can remember something. The year before last, when my eldest son Fujino was still in Fukui Middle School, Mr. Guan, who gave a Chinese lecture, said to him, "This book was written by your father. Take a look. If so, tell us about those things. " So the eldest son, Da Da, also borrowed a book written by Zhou Jun for me to read. It seems that all these works were translated by Sato.

About half a year later, Mr. Guan came to see me and talked about the things mentioned in the book. From Mr. Guan, I know that Zhou Jun became an excellent writer after returning to China. Mr. Guan died last year. I heard that Mr Maeda, a teacher in Himeji Normal School, also said something about Zhou Jun.

Let me go back to the previous topic. Zhou Jun studied in Sendai Medical College for only one year, and then I never saw him again. Now it seems that studying medicine is not his real goal. Zhou Jun came to my house to say goodbye when he left, but I forgot the specific time of our last meeting. It is said that Zhou Jun hung my photo on the wall of his apartment until his death. I'm really happy. But I can't remember when and in what form I gave this photo to Zhou Jun.

If I were a graduate, I would take a photo with them as a souvenir, but I have never taken a photo with Zhou Jun. How did Zhou Jun get this photo of me? Maybe his wife gave it to him. Zhou wrote my photo. When he wrote it, I really wanted to see what I looked like at that time. Although I was honored as the only teacher by Zhou Jun, all I did was add some notes to him. Therefore, being regarded as the only teacher by Zhou Jun, I feel a little incredible myself.

Zhou Jun came to Japan just after the Japanese-Qing War. Although many years have passed since the Japanese-Japanese War, it is a pity that there was still an atmosphere in which the Japanese called Japanese "braid monks" and spoke ill of Japanese. So there is such a group of people in Sendai Medical College who look at Zhou Jun with dirty eyes and regard him as an alien.

When I was a teenager, I studied Chinese with Mr. Nosaka, who graduated from Fukui San Francisco School, so I respect the sages of Zhina very much and think we should cherish the people of this country. This is probably why I made Zhou Jun feel particularly cordial and grateful. Zhou Jun called me teacher in his novels or to his friends. If only I could read his works earlier. I heard that Zhou Jun wanted to know my news until he died. How happy Zhou Jun would be if I could get in touch with him earlier.

But unfortunately, nothing can be done now. I live in a remote rural area after retirement, and I don't know much about the outside world, especially literature. The news of the death of Jun and Lu Xun in the newspaper last week reminded me of those things mentioned above. I wonder how Zhou Jun's family is doing now. Does Zhou Jun have children?

I deeply mourn for Zhou Jun's spirit. He regards my insignificant kindness as a great kindness and prays for the health and safety of Zhou Jun's family.

Introduction to screaming

Lu Xun

I had many dreams when I was young, but I forgot most of them later, but I don't think it's a pity myself. The so-called memories can make people happy, but sometimes they can't help being lonely. What's the point of letting the spiritual line still hold the lonely time that has passed away? But I can't forget it all. I can't forget this part at all, and it has become the source of screaming.

I have been in and out of quality shops and pharmacies almost every day for more than four years, but I forgot my age. In short, the counter of the pharmacy is as high as mine, and the quality store is twice as high as mine. I send clothes or jewelry from a counter that is twice as high, collect money contemptuously, and then go to the counter as high as me to buy medicine for my father who has been ill for a long time. When I get home, I have to be busy with other things, because the doctors who prescribe medicines are the most famous, and the medicines used for this purpose are also various: reed roots in winter, sugar cane frosted for three years, crickets that are right, flat wood that bears seeds, ... all are difficult to do. However, my father finally died day by day.

Has anyone fallen into poverty from Xiaokang family? I think, on this road, I can probably see the true face of the world; I want to go to K school, as if I want to take a different road, escape from different places and seek different people. My mother didn't have the law, so she set up an eight-dollar Sichuan pension, saying it was for me. But it is natural to cry easily, because it was the correct way to study and take exams at that time. The so-called westernization is regarded as a desperate person by the society, so he has to sell his soul to the devil, and he is doubly ridiculed and rejected, so he is easy to see his son. But I didn't care about it either, and finally I went to N and K school. In this school, I didn't know there were so-called discipline, mathematics, geography, history, painting and gymnastics. Physiology is not taught, but we have seen some woodcut editions of New Holism and Chemical Hygiene. I still remember the doctor's comments and prescriptions in the past. Compared with what I know now, I gradually realize that Chinese medicine is just a liar intentionally or unintentionally, and I feel sympathy for the deceived patients and their families. And from the translated history, we know that most of the reforms in Japan originated from Western medicine.

Because of these childish knowledge, my school status was later listed in a rural medical college in Japan. My dream is very happy. I'm going to come back after graduation to treat the pain of patients who were misdiagnosed like my father. I will become a military doctor during the war, and at the same time, I will publicize the reform beliefs of the people of China. I don't know how to teach microbiology, but now I have made progress. In short, at that time, movies were used to express the morphology of microorganisms, so sometimes the teacher would show some pictures of scenery or current events to the students before the time was up, so as to make use of this extra time. At that time, the Russo-Japanese War was going on, so naturally there were many pictures about the war. In this lecture hall, I have to applaud and cheer with my classmates all the time. On one occasion, I suddenly met many people from China who I hadn't seen for a long time in the photo. One is tied in the middle, and there are many people standing around, all of whom are physically strong and numb. According to the explanation, it is tied with a military detective for Russia, who is about to be beheaded by the Japanese army and surrounded by people who come to enjoy this grand exhibition.

I have arrived in Tokyo before the end of this school year, because from then on, I felt that medicine was not an urgent matter. All stupid and weak citizens, no matter how healthy and strong, can only do meaningless propaganda materials and spectators, and there is no need to think that they died unfortunately. Therefore, our first task is to change their spirit, and what is good at changing their spirit is that I thought it was natural to advocate literature and art at that time, so I wanted to advocate the literary movement. Many overseas students in Tokyo study law, politics, physics and chemistry and even the police industry, but no one cares about literature and art; However, in the cold air, we were lucky to find a few comrades. In addition, we invited several necessary people. After discussion, the first step, of course, was to publish a magazine under the name of "New Life", because we generally had some retro tendencies at that time, so we only called it "New Life".

The publication date of "New Life" is approaching, but at first a group of writers were hidden, and then the capital fled, leaving only three people without money. When it was established, it was self-defeating. Of course, there is nothing to say if it failed. Later, even these three people were driven by their own destinies and could not talk about their beautiful dreams in the future in one place. This is the end of the "new life" that we didn't have.

I am tired of my inexperience and have been so ever since. I don't know why; Later, I thought that whenever someone's ideas are praised and praised, it is to promote their progress, and when they are opposed, it is to promote their struggle. Shouting among strangers is unique. Strangers don't respond, agree or object, such as being in an endless wasteland and being at a loss. How sad, so I feel lonely about my feelings.

This loneliness grows up day by day, like a poisonous snake, haunting my soul.

However, although I also have my own unprovoked sadness, I don't resent it, because this experience made me reflect and see myself clearly: that is, I am by no means a hero who has gathered all the responders.

Only my own loneliness is inevitable, because it is too painful for me. So I anesthetized my soul in various ways, let me sink into the people and let me go back to ancient times. Later, I also witnessed or watched a few lonely and sad things. I don't want to pursue them. I am willing to use my brain to make them disappear into the soil. But my anesthesia seems to have worked, and there is no more passionate meaning in youth.

There are three rooms in Hall S (3). Legend has it that a woman was hanged from a locust tree in the yard in the past. Now the locust tree is out of reach, and this room is unoccupied. For many years, I have lived in this room to record ancient ruins. Few guests came, and there were no questions or teachings in the ancient monument, but my life was secretly wiped out, which was my only wish. On summer nights, when there are many mosquitoes, I shake my cattail leaf fan and sit under the locust tree, looking at the blue sky through the dense leaves. Late-born locust silkworms often fall coldly on my head and neck.

At that time, I came to talk about an old friend, Jin Xinyi (5). He put his big wallet on the broken table, took off his gown and sat opposite him. Because he is afraid of dogs, his heart still seems to be pounding.

"What's the use of your money?" One night, he flipped through my ancient tablet notes and did a research topic.

"It's no use."

"So, what do you mean by asking him to pay the bill?"

"It doesn't mean anything."

"I think you can do some articles ..."

I know what he means. They are running New Youth. However, at that time, it seemed that no one agreed and no one opposed it. I thought they might feel lonely, but they said:

"If an iron house has no windows, it is extremely difficult to decompose. There are many sleeping people in it, and they will soon suffocate, but they will go from lethargy to death and will not feel the sorrow of death. Now you are shouting, you have awakened several sober people, and you have made this unfortunate minority suffer irreparable dying pain. Do you think you deserve them? "

"However, since several people have come up, you can't say that there is no hope of destroying this iron house."

Yes, although I have my own beliefs, when it comes to hope, I can't deny it, because hope lies in the future, and I can't convince him of the so-called solvability with my indispensable proof, so I finally promised him to make a fuss about it. This is the original diary of a madman. After that, it was too fast to be collected. Every time, I write some novel-like articles to perfunctory my friends' entrustment, and after a long time, there will be more than a dozen articles.

In my own mind, I thought I was no longer an eager person who broke his word, but maybe I still couldn't forget the loneliness and sadness of that day, so sometimes I couldn't help shouting to comfort the brave man who was running in loneliness and let him not be afraid of his predecessors. As for whether my cry is brave or sad, hateful or ridiculous, it doesn't matter so much; But since it's up to you to cry, of course, I often don't care about using a curved pen to put a wreath at Yu's grave in medicine, and don't tell her tomorrow that she didn't see her son's dream, because the Lord didn't advocate negativity at that time. As for myself, I don't want to spread what I think is bitter loneliness to those young people who are dreaming as I was when I was young.

In this way, the distance between my novel and art can be imagined. However, it is a fluke to be able to cover the name of the novel today and even have the opportunity to collect books. However, although luck makes me uneasy, I am still happy that there are readers in the world for the time being.

So I actually collected my short stories and printed them. For the reasons mentioned above, I called them Scream.

19221February 3rd, written by Lu Xun in Beijing.

The origin of the pseudonym "Lu Xun"

Lu Xun is a great writer, thinker and revolutionary in modern China. Lu Xun, formerly known as Zhang, Zhou Zhangshou, Yu Shan, and 19 10 was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in September. His grandfather Zhou Fuqing was an official in Beijing at that time. When the good news of having a grandson reached him, it happened that Zhang Zhidong was visiting. His grandfather named his grandson "Zhang" after what happened to him, and later named him after the homophonic "Zhang Shou" and "Yushan". Lu Xun entered a private school at the age of seven. The pronunciation of "Yushan" and "Umbrella" in Shaoxing dialect is similar, so students often make fun of him, so they asked grandpa to change his name, and later changed his name to Yuting, and then changed his name to a talented person. 1898, 17-year-old Lu Xun left his hometown and came to Nanjing. He defected to an uncle named Jiao Sheng and entered the Jiangnan Naval Academy.

Zhou Jiaosheng himself was an official in the Navy Academy, but he was extremely contemptuous of this westernization school. He thinks that it is really "noble" for his descendants to come here to be a flag-waving sailor instead of paying homage to their ancestors. In order not to embarrass the ancestors in the grave, he felt that Lu Xun should not use the name in the genealogy, so he changed the real name of "Zhang Shou" to "Shu Ren", which means "it takes ten years to plant trees, but it takes a hundred years to plant trees".

19 18 In May, with the encouragement and introduction of money, Lu Xun published the first vernacular novel Diary of a Madman in the history of modern literature in China, and used the pseudonym "Lu Xun" for the first time. Before "Lu Xun", he also used the pseudonym "Lu Xun". Lu Xun used more than 140 pen names in his life, and Wenda became famous under the pen name of "Lu Xun".

Xu Shoushang once explained: "(1) The mother's surname is Lu, (2) it is a country with the same surname, and (3) it means stupid and fast."

Lu Xun visiting Japan.

Everyone in China knows Lu Xun and the article Mr. Fujino written by a great writer in China. 1904 to 1906, Lu Xun attended Mr. Fujino's class at Sendai Medical College (now Tohoku University). Today, the statue of Mr. Lu Xun stands in the shade of his Japanese alma mater and becomes a symbol of friendly exchanges between China and Japan.

In the lecture hall attended by Lu Xun, we listened to the sound of reading he left here 90 years ago, and felt his emotional rhythm of abandoning medicine and governing the country by literature. The lifting double-deck blackboard used in those years is now filled with the inscriptions and names of visitors from China. These chalk words express not the anatomical knowledge that Lu Xun didn't like in those days, but the admiration and nostalgia of Chinese people for him. The school told us that whenever a blackboard is full of words, we should take pictures, make a picture frame and hang it, then clean the blackboard and wait for others to continue writing. Sure enough, several such photos were hung on both sides of the blackboard.

The report card of Lu Xun's first academic year was displayed in the window of the Memorial Reference Room of Northeastern University, and his least favorite anatomy class only got a "D". As yellow as this 1905 report card is a plant sketch, which is the work of Lu Xun and his classmates. Finally, Lu Xun resolutely put down his small scalpel and brush, raised a big pen like a spear and dagger, and dedicated his innocent feelings to the terminally ill motherland and unfortunate compatriots.
