[Paper Keywords] oral teaching reform classroom teaching mode supporting facilities
Abstract: Cultivating and strengthening students' listening and speaking ability is one of the focuses of college English teaching reform. Under the guidance of new teaching objectives, college oral English teaching is also facing new challenges. This paper constructs the framework and implementation method of oral English teaching reform from three aspects: oral English classroom setting, classroom teaching mode and supporting facilities. ?
First, the background of oral English teaching reform
In the programmatic document of college English teaching reform "Requirements for College English Curriculum Reform (Trial)" (hereinafter referred to as "Curriculum Requirements (Trial)"), the first part "Teaching Nature and Objectives" defines the teaching objectives of college English as "cultivating students' comprehensive English application ability, especially listening and speaking ability", "enhancing students' autonomous learning ability" and "improving students' comprehensive cultural literacy". This teaching goal reflects that one of the focuses of college English teaching reform is to strengthen listening and speaking, which is put forward in view of the fact that college English used to focus on reading comprehension and students' listening and speaking ability was weak. From June 5438 to October 26, 2007, the Ministry of Education also clearly stipulated in the "Nine Goals" of the "Quality Project" of higher education: "Using information technology to implement English teaching, so that more than 60% of college graduates can solve English listening and speaking problems within four years". It can be seen that it is an urgent task to cultivate and improve college students' English listening and speaking ability. In the new reform environment, college oral English teaching is facing new challenges. This paper intends to put forward the reform plan of college oral English teaching from three aspects: classroom setting, classroom teaching mode and supporting facilities.
Second, the oral classroom settings
At present, many universities in China offer two-hour listening and speaking courses every week. However, due to the large amount of listening materials, the large number of students and the increase in the proportion of listening in the new CET-4 and CET-6, many teachers spend most of their time on listening practice, leaving relatively little time for students to practice oral English. In fact, speaking and listening are two closely related but completely different opposite behavioral processes in oral communication. Listening alone can't improve students' communicative competence. At present, our school has set up a two-hour oral class in small classes every week in the pilot work of teaching reform, which has been implemented for more than half a year and achieved remarkable results. The number of students in oral English class should not be too large, and about 30 students is an ideal state, which is convenient for teachers to control the process of classroom activities and the effect of communication and interaction between students will be better. In addition, qualified schools should set up special oral classrooms, and desks and chairs can move freely to facilitate students' group discussion.
"Curriculum Requirements (Trial)" points out: "China has a vast territory, and the situation in different regions and universities is quite different. College English teaching should implement the principle of classified guidance and teaching students in accordance with their aptitude to meet the actual needs of teaching. " Generally speaking, the number of students in an institution of higher learning varies greatly, and many subjective and objective factors cause the freshmen's English level, especially their oral English level, to be uneven. In the traditional teaching classroom, all students receive knowledge under the same teaching mode, and there are often cases where good students do not have enough to eat and poor students do not have enough to eat. Therefore, it is necessary to implement graded teaching in oral English class. Freshmen are tested in oral English when they enter the school, and teachers conduct one-on-one evaluation, which can be divided into two or three grades according to the actual teaching staff in colleges and universities, and then graded teaching. Graded teaching should be based on the principle of student-centered, and the teaching objectives and methods should be formulated according to the actual situation of students of all grades.
Conditional schools should also carry out second-class activities to improve students' oral English. The second class can create more English language environment. These activities can effectively provide students with information input in English language and opportunities and conditions for communication in English, and stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning English.
Third, the classroom teaching mode
Freshmen should first correct their pronunciation after entering school. Freshmen come from all parts of the motherland. On the one hand, their education level is uneven, on the other hand, influenced by local dialects, most students lack accuracy in pronunciation. College English can refer to the teaching mode of pronunciation course for junior English majors. In the first semester, students can arrange an hour-long pronunciation class once a week. Teachers can teach and demonstrate pronunciation essentials and rules, and can play pure English and American pronunciation reading tapes for students to follow.
When organizing classroom teaching, we should pay attention to step by step and be targeted. For students with poor foundation, a lot of language practice and follow-up reading can be used in class, especially sentence pattern practice. Teaching content is usually based on the text or scenes related to the text, which requires students to fully analyze and understand the materials first, then follow up, recite and then do replacement exercises. In the primary stage of oral English teaching, students can acquire a lot of language information in this way and build a better connotative knowledge system. On a certain basis, teachers should pay more attention to the combination of oral practice and specific situations, and encourage students to apply the language knowledge they have learned to their own relevant contexts and creatively use it. For the design of teaching content, teachers should input information according to students' knowledge level and make adjustments according to the progress of the class. In addition, in oral class, teachers can use a recording or video material for listening and speaking training, so that students can listen to the phonetic material several times first, and then arrange for students to repeat or simply express. This is because listening is an important means to obtain language information, and the improvement of listening level can stimulate students' desire to speak and express language.
Fourth, supporting auxiliary facilities
Of course, supporting teaching materials are the first to bear the brunt. Although there are many modern auxiliary means in college English teaching, the position of traditional textbooks is irreplaceable. At present, college oral English textbooks are generally lack of systematicness, and there are many oral English textbooks on the market, but there are few textbooks specifically aimed at non-English majors and meeting the general needs of students of various majors. Therefore, college oral English textbooks should choose topics and contents that are related to campus study and life and adapt to the development of modern society, so that students can be interested and applied to practice, and truly apply what they have learned. Colleges and universities can organize teaching and research staff to compile suitable teaching materials or practical manuals according to their actual needs, and pay attention to collecting students' feedback to improve it in teaching.
One of the focuses of college English teaching reform is the application of modern information technology in education, that is, multimedia network technology-assisted teaching. In oral English teaching, virtual reality technology can be used to create communication situations similar to real life, thus promoting students' acquisition of language knowledge and improving their oral English practice ability. Network teaching can be carried out mainly through classroom demonstration, individual teaching guidance, teaching simulation, distance teaching and other modes, or with the help of network voice intercom function or audio-visual resources. For example, through voice chat, students, teachers and students can carry out extensive oral practice activities, thus improving their oral English skills. Schools can also publish some audio-visual resources that are convenient for students to enter on the campus network, so that students can not only listen to rich English online broadcasts, but also watch original English movies and TV programs online, creating an entertaining listening and speaking environment for learners, so that learners can continuously enhance their oral English ability in a large number of language inputs. Colleges and universities should also use or develop their own multimedia oral software, which has the functions of listening, reading, recording, speaking, testing and evaluating, so as to facilitate students' autonomous learning and teachers' monitoring.
Verb (abbreviation of verb) conclusion
College English teaching reform is an important means to improve the quality of college English teaching and enhance students' comprehensive English application ability. College oral English teaching must also conform to the requirements of the overall environment and implement the reform step by step. In the process of oral English teaching reform, school teaching management departments, modern information technology departments, teachers and students should actively participate in and cooperate with each other, while retaining the advantages of traditional teaching mode, integrate modern teaching concepts and teaching methods, so as to truly improve students' oral English ability and comprehensive application ability.
