What did Zeng Guofan rely on to form a powerful Xiang army?
Xiang generals mainly came from Xiangxiang, mostly feudal Confucian scholars, while soldiers recruited farmers in Xiangxiang area. Zeng Guofan and some important generals are not only fellow villagers, but also classmates, teachers and students, relatives and friends. The soldiers of the Xiang army were recruited by the battalion officers themselves, and they only obeyed the battalion officers and were subordinate at all levels. The whole army only takes orders from Zeng Guofan. Zeng Guofan's military management focuses on ideological discipline rather than technical training. He sang for the army written by Xiang Jun: "The rules should be quiet, polite, disciplined and orderly." He gave a military salute to "distinguish powers", and used the Confucian ethics of three cardinal guides and five permanents, the hierarchical system of upper and lower levels, and the local concept of fellow villagers to maintain the officers and men, making the Xiang army a powerful army to maintain feudal rule.
