At present, there are 1 mineralogy, petrology and mineral deposit science under the first-class discipline of geology in Xi Youshi University. After years of development and construction, it has formed five characteristic research directions: oil and gas reservoir geology, reservoir geology and applied sedimentology, natural gas geology and geochemistry, unconventional oil and gas geology, and structural geology of oil and gas-bearing basins.
1. Petroleum accumulation geology
Hydrocarbon accumulation geology is the core of petroleum geology and a branch of petroleum geology that studies the formation and distribution of oil and gas reservoirs. In this direction, focusing on Ordos basin, Tarim basin, Sichuan basin and Qaidam basin, the reservoir-forming theory of complex superimposed basins and low-permeability oil and gas fields in central and western China is comprehensively and systematically studied. A number of outstanding scientific research achievements have been formed in the theory of oil and gas accumulation in superimposed basins, foreland basins, natural gas accumulation and low-ultra-low permeability oil and gas accumulation.
2. Reservoir Geology and Applied Sedimentology
This direction uses modern sedimentology principles and reservoir evaluation techniques and methods to study the sedimentary origin and spatial distribution of source rocks and reservoir rocks, describe and evaluate the macro and micro characteristics of reservoirs, predict the distribution law of favorable reservoirs, and provide theoretical basis for oil and gas field exploration and development. After long-term efforts, a number of important and outstanding scientific research achievements have been formed in the restoration of sedimentary environment of paleocontinental lake basin, methods and techniques of paleogeographic mapping, formation mechanism of carbonate paleokarst and reservoir evaluation method, reservoir description and reservoir modeling technology.
3. Natural gas geology and geochemistry
Focusing on Ordos, Tarim, Sichuan and other gas-rich basins in central and western China, this direction has carried out research on the control factors, mechanism, migration and evaluation of unconventional natural gas resources around the main scientific and technological problems faced by natural gas exploration. After years of efforts, a number of important and outstanding scientific research achievements have been formed in the aspects of natural gas geochemistry and genetic identification, formation conditions and distribution law of atmospheric field, natural gas resource potential and exploration evaluation in superimposed basins.
4. Unconventional oil and gas geology
With the increasing difficulty of exploration of conventional oil and gas resources, exploring and developing unconventional oil and gas resources such as tight oil and gas, shale oil and gas, coalbed methane and natural gas hydrate with huge resources has become an inevitable choice for the development of the world oil and gas industry, and the world oil and gas industry is about to enter an era of equal development of conventional oil and gas. The geological theory and exploration technology of unconventional oil and gas fields (reservoirs) have become an important issue in oil and gas exploration in China. In this direction, a lot of high-level research work has been carried out in unconventional oil and gas geology and exploration, and a number of important unconventional oil and gas geology research results have been formed, such as Paleozoic tight gas in Ordos Basin, Mesozoic tight carbonate oil and gas in tight oil and Tarim Basin, etc.
5. Tectonic geology of petroliferous basins
The structural geology of oil-bearing basins studies how sedimentary basins are transformed into oil-bearing basins in the process of plate tectonic evolution, internal structural framework, tectonic activity and evolution history, and the control of structures on oil and gas accumulation. After years of efforts, this direction has formed a number of outstanding scientific research achievements in the restoration of prototype basins, the analysis of internal structure of basins, and the study of fault sealing.
Five, curriculum, hours and credits

1. The paper opening report should be completed before the end of the third semester. Each graduate student must read at least 30 articles related to his research work, including at least 10 articles in foreign languages, and write a literature review report. 2. Thesis must be independently completed by graduate students under the guidance of tutors. The topic of the paper and the academic level to be achieved have the following requirements:
