Yan can't be spelled with y-an-Yan.

There is a vowel ian in the Chinese phonetic scheme. Yan is the way ian writes syllables alone, so he can only read them directly.

However, in the current pinyin teaching materials, there is no ian in the vowel table and no yan in the overall reading table. This should be a loophole, and the teaching materials need to be supplemented and improved.
