History of Dunhuang studies
(1978 ~) After 1970s, Dunhuang studies entered a new research period. The research team has expanded, and new research institutions and academic groups have been formed. Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute was expanded to Dunhuang Research Institute (1984), and research institutions were set up in institutions of higher learning, such as Dunhuang and Turpan Literature Research Office in Peking University, Dunhuang Studies Office in Lanzhou University and Dunhuang Studies Institute in Northwest Normal University. China also has the Dunhuang Turpan Society, whose president is Ji Xianlin, and there are Dunhuang Societies in Gansu, Zhejiang and other provinces. Starting from 1982, a national or international academic seminar on Dunhuang studies is basically held every year. The research involves all aspects, puts forward some new topics and makes new breakthroughs in many aspects. While further improving the research and collation of Dunhuang cultural relics, we should strive to build a complete discipline system. In terms of data arrangement and publication, Interpretation of Social and Economic Documents in Dunhuang (5 series), Dunhuang Tripitaka (63 volumes) and Dunhuang Treasure (140 volumes) are all huge data sets, which have laid a foundation for further research. A number of high-quality research works have been published, including China Grottoes, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, China Fine Arts Complete Works, Dunhuang Murals, Dunhuang Turpan Literature Research Collection, Dunhuang Turpan Unearthed Economic Documents Research, Dunhuang Suicide Notes Collection, Dunhuang Literature Collection and Dunhuang Grottoes Art Collection. In addition, there are proceedings of various academic conferences, such as 1983 national Dunhuang academic seminar proceedings. The journal Dunhuang Studies sponsored by Dunhuang Research Institute (founded at 1983) and Dunhuang Studies sponsored by Taiwan Province Culture University have published a number of high-quality academic papers. These works and papers have summarized or made a breakthrough research on the art of Mogao Grottoes, Yuwen, Uighur Mongolian, social and economic documents, social and municipal documents, calligraphy papers, medieval temples, the history of Guiyi Army, Dunhuang music and dance scores, singing literature, Dunhuang music lyrics, Dunhuang architectural technology and other topics.
