First, the conceptual metaphor theory

Conceptual metaphor theory originated from Lakoff &; Metaphor by which we live. In their books, they show that metaphor is ubiquitous in our daily life, not only in language, but also in our thoughts and behaviors. The general conceptual system of our thinking and action is fundamentally metaphorical. [1] Under the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphor, the understanding of metaphor involves two cognitive domains: source domain and target domain. Conceptual metaphor is to use the experience of one cognitive field to understand the experience of another cognitive field. Some features of the source domain are being mapped to the target domain, which is partially understood by the former. So? The essence of metaphor is to use one thing to understand and experience another? . [2] Conceptual metaphor theory also puts forward the difference between conceptual metaphor and metaphorical expression. The former is the mapping between two cognitive domains, which is usually represented by capital letters in English, while the latter is a concrete metaphorical expression of conceptual metaphor, such as:

Example 1. We are at a crossroads.

Example 2. Relationship, isn't it I'm not going anywhere.

Example 3. Our relationship is off track.

Example 4. Their marriage is on the verge of breaking up.

Conceptual metaphor theory holds that there is only one metaphor here: love is a journey, and these examples are concrete expressions of this metaphor in language.

Conceptual metaphor theory makes us re-understand the essence of metaphor and brings new enlightenment to language teaching. This paper intends to explore the role of metaphor in English writing by using conceptual metaphor theory, and points out the importance of metaphorical thinking to English writing, thus providing a new perspective for writing teaching.

Second, the application of conceptual metaphor theory in English writing teaching

(A) Conceptual metaphor and vocabulary learning

Vocabulary plays a central role in writing. No matter the language phenomenon at sentence level or text level, it is inseparable from the understanding and application of words. Influenced by structuralism, traditional vocabulary learning thinks that the relationship between words and meanings is completely arbitrary, ignoring the cognition and understanding of words. Vocabulary has not only its signified meaning, but also its transferred meaning. Moreover, the surface meaning and deep connotation of vocabulary are the products of language cognition. Because most learners don't learn vocabulary from a cognitive perspective, they use rote learning, so they can't really understand the connotation of vocabulary. Understanding and explaining vocabulary through conceptual metaphor model is not only conducive to the understanding of vocabulary, but also can promote students to effectively use the metaphorical meaning of vocabulary in oral and written expressions, and cultivate students' language application ability and innovation ability.

For example, we use orientation metaphor to understand preposition learning. People can get what they need through physical experience. Up and down, front and back, high and low, depth, middle edge? Projecting specific spatial concepts such as time, emotion, physical condition, quantity, quality, social status and other abstract concepts. In the orientation metaphor,? Up and down? Conceptual metaphor is the most widely used. At first, where to go? Concepts (I) and? Next? Concepts (below) are all pure space concepts. What is the basic meaning of Up? Up, from low to high? ; What is the basic meaning of down? Down, from high to low? . English and Chinese are used and developed repeatedly. Up and down? Are based on the original spatial meaning, leading to.

Happiness goes up, sadness goes down; More is up, less is down; High status, low status? Homologous metaphor is used to express the understanding of social status and people's emotions. On the basis of these conceptual metaphors, we can expand rich metaphorical expressions and further deepen our understanding of? Up? Concept and? Come down? Metaphorical understanding of concepts, such as? I feel it. ? ,? The price is rising? ,? The temperature dropped. ? ,? Be nice to people when you go up, because you will meet them when you go down. ? Wait a minute. It can be seen that understanding prepositions through conceptual metaphor theory can grasp richer lexical meanings, enhance students' metaphorical ability and improve the diversity of writing.

Secondly, because metaphor is a kind of mapping, its essence is to understand and experience another kind of things with the help of one kind of things, [3] so people always refer to their familiar concrete concepts to understand and know strange abstract concepts. Reflected in vocabulary expression, people often talk about another concept with words that talk about all aspects of one concept. For example: mention the concept? Arguing? Do we have conceptual metaphors?

Argumentation is a building; Argument is war? , ? Arguing? A more abstract concept. Architecture? ,? War? This is a familiar concept. Talk? Architecture? This concept can help students associate and? Architecture? Related words? Strong buildings, building frames, building, collapse, foundation? ; What are you talking about? War? What can this concept associate with? War? Related words? Fierce war, attack the enemy, win the war, be defeated in the war? . In these two conceptual metaphors, people can understand them through familiar concepts? Arguing? The connotation of this concept. To talk about? Architecture? ,? War? Most words can be used to talk about? Arguing? , so that you can create the following sentence:

Example 5. we? I already have a strong framework for argument.

Example 6. What if you don't? T have any hard facts to support your argument.
