Jilin University has a long history of studying Northeast Asia. As early as 1964, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Japan Research Office and Korea Research Office were established, and in the 1980s, Japan Research Institute, Population Research Institute, Soviet Research Institute and Korea Research Institute were established successively. 1994, in order to meet the needs of reform and opening up and the development of regional economic cooperation in Northeast Asia, Japan Institute, Population Institute, Russian Institute, Korea Institute, Tumen River International Development Institute and Regional Economic Institute merged to form Northeast Asia Institute, which implemented unified management of administration, scientific research and teaching, and realized a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary comprehensive study of politics, economy, history and culture in Northeast Asia. 1997, the project "Regional Economy, History and Social Development in Northeast Asia" led by Northeast Asia Institute was approved by the state as the "21/project" key discipline construction project. 1999 10, relying on the Northeast Asia Research Institute, the Northeast Asia Research Center of Jilin University was established by hiring researchers engaged in world economy, international politics, Northeast Asia history, etc. 1February 1999, the Northeast Asia Research Center of Jilin University was approved by the Ministry of Education and became one of the first batch of 15 key research bases of humanities and social sciences in colleges and universities. In September, 20001year, Northeast Asia Research Center reorganized the original national research laboratory by taking advantage of the merger of five universities of New Jilin University and the adjustment of disciplines, and established four professional research laboratories: Northeast Asia Economic Research Laboratory, Northeast Asia Political Research Laboratory, Northeast Asia Historical and Cultural Research Laboratory and Northeast Asia Population, Resources and Environment Research Laboratory. There is a national research laboratory under the professional research laboratory, that is, while maintaining the national research advantage, strengthen the comprehensive research ability and provide institutional guarantee for the completion of major projects. In September, 20001,the Northeast Asia Research Center, Tumen River Development Office of Jilin Province, Yanbian Development Office and Hunchun Municipal Government jointly established Tumen River International Development Laboratory. The laboratory accepts the research projects entrusted by the state and local governments on the development of Tumen River area. In August, 2004, Professor Wang, the director (deputy director) of Northeast Asia Research Center, was appointed as the Secretary-General of the Advisory Expert Group on "Regional Cooperation between China and Neighboring Countries", making the Center directly serve the relevant state departments in formulating the Tumen River development strategy. In May 2003, in order to meet the needs of discipline construction, some research forces were transferred from the Economic Research Office and the Population, Resources and Environment Research Office to form a regional economic research office, and the original economic research office was renamed the World Economic Research Office. After reform, adjustment and integration, the Northeast Asia Research Center now has six research rooms, namely, the world economy research room, the regional economy research room, the population, resources and environment research room, the international politics research room, the historical and cultural research room and the Tumen River international development research room. After more than five years of construction, the overall scientific research strength of Northeast Asia Research Center has been significantly improved.
