Porcine circovirus belongs to circoviridae circovirus in taxonomy and is one of the smallest known animal viruses. The virus particles are 14- 17 nm in diameter, with icosahedral symmetry structure and no envelope. They contain single-stranded circular negative-strand DNA with valence of * * *, the genome size is about 1.76kb, the virus sedimentation coefficient is 525, and the CsCl floating density is1. The resistance of PCV to external physical and chemical factors is quite strong, and it can survive for a period of time even in the acidic environment of PH3 and the high temperature environment of 72℃. Chloroform is inactive and has no hemagglutination activity.

According to the difference of pathogenicity, antigenicity and nucleotide sequence, PCV can be divided into two serotypes: PCV- 1 and PCV-2. Pcv-L was first isolated by Tischer( 1974) from the porcine kidney subculture cell line PK- 15, which had been polluted for a long time. The experiment confirmed that PCV-L is not pathogenic and widely exists in pig and pig-derived subculture cell lines. PCV-2 is a newly discovered virus closely related to PMWS since 1996, and the results of artificial infection also show that it is the pathogen of PMWS.
