The development of commodity economy in Song Dynasty promoted citizens' demand for culture, and Goulan and Wasi in Beijing provided a broad stage for the emergence of novels and dramas in Song Dynasty. The development of literature in Song Dynasty is manifested in two aspects: elegance and vulgarity. One is folk literature with scripts and zaju as the main content, and the other is classical literature with poems and ancient prose as the main content. The former is of great significance in the history of China literature. Teachers of College of Literature of Henan University worked hard in the literary garden of the Song Dynasty, and successively undertook three national social science fund projects and several provincial-level projects, involving language, drama, novels, ci, poetry, literature, publishing, printing and other fields in the Song Dynasty.

Zaju in Song Dynasty is the embryonic form of China's ancient drama. As early as 1930s, Mr. Hua Zhongyan wrote A Series of Talks on Traditional Chinese Opera, which described the origin, system, phonology, palace tune, role of traditional Chinese opera, as well as the differences, practices, methods and schools between North and South Chinese operas, and opened a precedent for Henan University to study Song Dynasty dramas. Song Ci is a wonderful work in the history of China literature, and the study of Ci literature has always been the traditional dominant discipline of Henan University. As early as 1930s, famous poets Lu Qian and Huazhong Yan began to study Ci. 1933, Mr. Lu Qian discovered and copied an important written document "Record of Song Ci" (also known as "Nineteen Poems of Song Ci") in Duanmudui in the late Qing Dynasty, which was cited as a major event in the field of Ci at that time, and Wu Mei, Liu Yizhi, Chen and Chen all had inscriptions. The Annotation of Hua Zhongyan's Huajian Collection published in 1930s is the first Annotation of Huajian Collection in the modern sense. Mr Tong Peiji published Selected Works of Xin Qiji. Mr. Zou Tongqing's monograph Annotation on the Chronology of Su Shi's Ci solved many academic problems such as collation, chronicle and annotation of Su Shi's Ci, and was called the masterpiece of Su Shi's research. Professor Sun Keqiang has published dozens of academic papers in publications such as Literary Criticism and Literary Heritage. He once presided over the 1998 Henan Provincial Education Commission's "Song Dynasty Ci" project, and recently presided over the National Social Science Fund's "Song Dynasty Literary Thought Research", which also listed the collation of Song Dynasty Ci literature as an important content. His monograph Ci Hua in Tang and Song Dynasties contains 2 198 poets in Tang and Song Dynasties. In addition, Song Jingchang and Qi Wenbang also studied Su Shi's ci. Liu's Study on Ci Poetry in Southern Song Dynasty and Period was listed as a fund project of Henan University in 2003.
The study of Song poetry in Henan University focuses on Wang Anshi, Su Shi, Lu You, Huang Tingjian and others. In addition, Song Erkang also undertook the planning project of Henan Provincial Education Commission "Poetry Research in Song Dynasty".
There are six poets in the "Eight Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties", and Wen Song's position in article study in Tang and Song Dynasties can be imagined. Liu Rong discussed the article theories of Ouyang Xiu, Su San, Wang Anshi and Ceng Gong from the perspective of article study. Zhang Chi and Yang Guoan studied the role of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu in the ancient prose movement in Tang and Song Dynasties from the perspective of academic history. Wang Liqun's interest focuses on the travel notes of the Song Dynasty with Su Shi and Lu You as the core. Zhang Chi and Ke discussed Su Shi's religious beliefs and the logical laws of historical figures. Xie and Geng Jiping respectively investigated the relationship between Fan Zhongyan and his teachers and Wang Anshi's predecessors, as well as Wang Anshi's contacts with Zeng and Xie, which provided a certain basis for the early academic formation of Fan Zhongyan and Wang Anshi. In addition, Li Xianchen presided over the social science planning project "On Huang Tingjian's Creation Aesthetics in Song Dynasty" in Henan Province 1999, and Geng Jiping undertook the humanities and social science research project "New Learning and Literature in Northern Song Dynasty" in 2004 by Henan Provincial Education Department.
The maturity of block printing and the invention of movable type printing promoted the development of printing industry and the prosperity of book publishing in Song Dynasty, and promoted the cultural exchanges between various ethnic groups and the international community. Wang Xinglin, Confucius, Chen Guangsheng and Zhao Weiguo made special studies on the book engraving industry in the Song Dynasty, the prohibition of the publication and dissemination of books and articles in the Song Dynasty, the collection and arrangement of books and documents in the Song Dynasty, and the time when Lv Zuqian and Song Wenjian and Taiping Guangji were introduced into South Korea.
