Project summary

Poverty and road safety

Darla, Robert B, Daniel J Graham and Kyle Poletta.

The project will examine the relationship between area-based poverty measured by various social welfare indicators and the incidence of road traffic injuries and deaths in these areas. Recent research shows that there is an unexplained link between poor areas and the increased risk of road traffic casualties. This happens not only to pedestrians, but also to drivers and passengers. Several hypotheses can explain this connection. First of all, these areas may have higher population density, so there are more pedestrian activities, which leads to increased risks. Secondly, these areas may not get enough funds to improve their road infrastructure to meet modern safety standards, including traffic calming. Thirdly, these areas may suffer from high-speed traffic, or because they are low-income areas, or because of the external influence of traffic, high traffic may cause them to become low-income areas. Finally, people with lower incomes tend to engage in risky behavior patterns, and may get inadequate or poor medical insurance, which may increase the frequency and severity of accidents. These problems will be studied by using the spatial econometric model of British data.

Accessibility of health facilities in South London

Su, (Supervisors: Bell and Graham)

The accessibility of hospitals and outpatient units in south London to different groups of people through public transport was investigated. Using ward-level data, this paper investigates the influence of social deprivation, health status, race, family size and car ownership on the accessibility of public transportation to medical institutions. London traffic itinerary planning and regression technology are used to estimate the travel time from ward to ward.

Turkey's Transport Policy and Joining Europe

Mazlum, Burcu, Robert Dalla, Daniel Graham.

The project is evaluating how Turkey's transportation policy can meet the requirements of Europe and prepare for its eventual accession to the European Union. This will involve reviewing the current Turkish transport policies and practices and analyzing how these policies and practices need to be changed in the near future. An integral part of this work will examine the planning practice in London as an example of how to implement traffic planning in Britain.

The variable income of urbanization and the influence of road traffic congestion.

Daniel Graham

This study investigates the relationship between urban density, productivity and road traffic congestion. A generalized transcendental logarithmic production-inverse input demand function is estimated to test the existence of variable returns in the urbanization of manufacturing, construction and service industries. Two independent urban density measurement methods are constructed, in which proximity is expressed by linear distance or generalized cost, and included in translog to identify the influence of road traffic congestion.

An Empirical Analysis Framework of Agglomeration Economy

Daniel Graham and Jin Yingquan.

The purpose of this study is to establish an empirical analysis framework of agglomeration economy, which can capture the impact on total factor productivity, partial factor productivity, factor price and factor demand. This method is based on the transcendental logarithmic production-inverse input demand function, which allows the total aggregation elasticity to be decomposed into returns generated by the improvement of factor input efficiency and the "direct" aggregation effect existing on any factor increase.

December 2007

Congratulations to Zia Wadud for successfully passing the doctoral thesis defense on February 3rd, 2007/KLOC-0. The theme of his thesis is "Individual tradable carbon emission permits for road transport: heterogeneity and distribution analysis of demand response". Zia was directed by Dr. Robert Dalla and Dr. Daniel graham, and was supported by a Commonwealth Research Scholarship. Zia is now a postdoctoral fellow at Cambridge University and will study at MIT for six months from April.

September 2007

Mr Piyapong (Joey) Jiwattanakulpaisarn was the co-winner of the Epainos prize at the 47th congress of the European Association for Regional Science held in Paris. This is for his thesis "Granger causality and spatial spillover effect of expressway infrastructure on regional economic development: evidence from the application of spatial filtering in panel vector autoregressive framework". The award is awarded to young scientists aged 33 or below for their best papers in the field of regional science.

July 2007

Congratulations on daniel graham's promotion to the position of chief researcher (reader). This is a recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of transportation economics and econometrics.

Bob Dalla and daniel graham received funding from the Volvo Research and Education Foundation. This project will use GIS data and spatial econometrics technology to study the relationship between road safety and traffic shortage. This will build on the previous work of the center, which established the link between poor communities and traffic deaths.

2007 1 month

Piyapong (Joey) Jiwattanakulpaisarn was invited to give a report on his recent work in Northwest University Transportation Center. The seminar was entitled "Cross-sports infrastructure investment and its impact on employment: theoretical connection, estimation problems and latest evidence".
