I know this book is a hard advertisement in Wen Hui Reading Weekly. The advertising language has no idea, but the headline alone is sensational enough to make me want to buy it. This purchase demand has existed since I bought Foucault's History of Sexual Experience. I heard Foucault's History of Sexual Experience a long time ago, and I thought it would start from ancient Greece in the form of history. After buying the simplified Chinese version of the mainland, I found that the title was translated into "History of Sexual Experience", and the title of the first chapter was "Cognitive Consciousness". Only then did I realize that it was not what I understood at first, so I crustily skin of head and looked down. There is no denying that Foucault's perspective of reconstructing the social rights system with practicality is very unique, but for an amateur who is not a sociology major, such works often make me confused and unable to read. Sometimes I feel that the content of the discussion deviates from the theme of the chapter, and sometimes I turn around many times to find that it is a theme. In short, only by reading more can we gradually understand some chapters and gradually recommend our understanding of the book.
The history of homosexuality in Europe has given me an insatiable desire to know the history of homosexuality from the history of sexuality. However, it's a pity that I found this book after buying it, because although the title is called "History of Homosexuality in Europe", it actually only describes the history of homosexuality in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Of course, from the market point of view, if the book is called Homosexuality in Europe in the 1920s-1930s, my desire to buy this book will drop a lot.
But in any case, although this book only describes the history of homosexuality in stages, as a rigorous academic work, this book still has a very comprehensive and objective perspective and reference value. The abbreviated version of the doctoral thesis of Florance Tamagne, the author of this book "History", was originally named "Research on Homosexuality in France, Britain and Germany from the end of 20th century to the end of 1930s". It should be said that the title of this paper reveals the main content of the book. This book systematically describes the homosexual situation in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s from the fields of homosexual members, sports, police, judicial attitude, medical research, literature materials and so on. The composition, development, main propositions and rise and fall of a large number of figures and organizations are very detailed. The self-identity contradiction of many gay writers and the main contents, tendencies and influences of their works make me deeply admire Florance.
Compared with other gay research books I have read, Li Yinhe talks too little about sex, which is more like a book to popularize sexual enlightenment to the public; Queer theory is too abstruse, because it is Li Yinhe's papers and speeches collected by many experts during the University of California 1999 gender seminar, so it lacks coherence. Although some chapters, such as Thinking about Sex: Notes on Sexual Politics Radicalism, make people look heroic, some are profound, especially because each chapter is written by different people, so it is loose and lacks a sense of system. As mentioned earlier, Foucault's History of Sexual Experience is too difficult for a book fan like me to promote the reading process, so it is difficult to understand. Up to now, The History of Homosexuality in Europe is the most systematic, objective and easy-to-understand book about homosexuality that I have ever read.
Although I have only read half of it now, I still can't help sharing my feelings now. I hope this book can be understood, familiar and loved by more readers.
