Cixi is located on the coast of the East China Sea, on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay, 60km from Ningbo in the east, 0/48km from Shanghai/KLOC-0 in the north and 0/38km from Hangzhou/KLOC-0 in the west. It is the center of the economic golden triangle of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo. The total area of the city is 136 1 square kilometer, and it governs 15 towns, 5 streets, 374 administrative villages (communities and neighborhood committees), with a registered population of 104 million and a temporary population of more than 900,000. Cixi belonged to the state of Yue in the Spring and Autumn Period and to the county in the Qin and Wei Dynasties. Since the Tang Dynasty, it has been called "Cixi" from the legend of "mother's kindness and filial piety" in An Dong in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is also commonly known as "Three Norths" because the area now spans the northern part of three counties. With rich cultural accumulation, it has nurtured regional cultures such as reclamation, immigration, celadon and filial piety.
