First, the relationship between design and philosophy

Philosophy is human's understanding and achievement of natural phenomena, social phenomena and consciousness phenomena. In the broadest sense, philosophy is the process and achievement of all human cognition.

Design is a creative activity based on people's needs to change the original things and make them change, acquire, update and develop; It is a process of coordinating the relationship between people, things and environment, and it is also a process of solving problems and conceiving solutions. Liu Guanzhong emphasized that it is necessary to prove that design is the third kind of wisdom and ability besides science and art that human beings will not be destroyed in the future. Design is a visual activity to explore and meet the needs, and the design is answered from the perspective of design theory. Need is the purpose of design, which determines the function of design. Satisfaction is the goal of design, and the characteristic of design is to explore design activities. This definition reveals the attributes of design: design is an activity of exploration, target search, creation and problem solving; Design objectives follow the principle of satisfaction; Design originates from demand, which is the driving force and source of design, which solves design and is the mother of design; The characteristic of design is visualization, which is different from imagination. This visualization includes words, symbols, sketches, patterns, models, animations, floor plans, schemes and so on. The goal of design is to express ideas and guide production, and design is a process of visualizing idea information; Design is a unique practical activity of human beings, which is different from other animals. It is an activity before pregnancy.

In a word, design and philosophy are the products of thought. It's just that the design can be completed by many people and can be innovative. Philosophy is restricted by society, and there can only be a unified philosophy in a social background. Because they are the products of two ideas, the design concept will be based on philosophy to a certain extent, and the products of design will promote the formation of new philosophy and realize social transformation.

Second, the important guiding significance of philosophy to design

"Thought is the soul of design, and culture is the highest embodiment of design." The process of designer's design conception is the process of ideological activities, and the presentation of design works is the final presentation of ideas. The circulation of design works is the exchange of ideas between consumers and designers. Thinking plays a very important role in design. Without thinking, work will be exhausted and life will be meaningless. Philosophy, as a unique cultural form, is the generalization and summary of specific knowledge such as nature, social knowledge and thinking knowledge, the highest embodiment and essence of human thought, and belongs to the second space of human society-spiritual field. Design is material, a material form that exists objectively in nature, and belongs to the first space of human society-material society. The two complement each other. Design works can be the carrier of philosophical thoughts, and philosophy can also guide and influence design works. A successful design work is bound to bear the designer's philosophical thinking on human society.

The long history of human civilization and design has been influenced by philosophical thoughts from beginning to end. For example, in China's traditional arts and crafts, architecture and other design practices, the theoretical essence of China's traditional philosophy-Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism is everywhere, and these ideological systems have formed a design culture with oriental characteristics. In western society, from ancient Greek humanism to medieval religious theology, from Renaissance humanism to Kant's rationalism, and then to modern scientism, structuralism, phenomenology, Frankfurt School, postmodernism and other ideological trends, all deeply affect the development direction of design.

Third, the embodiment of philosophy in design.

China's traditional philosophy is the precious wealth of China's modern design, which has a profound influence on the establishment of China's modern design thought and the formation of aesthetic characteristics. Without traditional philosophy, we can't understand China's modern design thought. Studying China's traditional philosophical thought system is helpful to improve the level of modern design and form modern design with national characteristics. The influence of China's traditional philosophy on modern design thought is not only reflected in the world outlook, but also in methodology. Analysis and research on their evolution, transformation and integration will give us enlightenment. We should also be able to translate it into a language that the world can accept and understand, which is also very beneficial to the development and exchange of world culture.

China's traditional graphic Taiji diagram expresses philosophical views. Taiji diagram uses black and white blocks to represent the two poles, indicating rotation and mutual blending. It shows a world outlook and material outlook of opposition and mutual transformation between Yin and Yang, and summarizes the space of China's traditional philosophy. In modern graphic design, some posters also express this philosophy, such as the poster named "Victory" by Mr. Chen Fang, which is the embodiment of Taoist philosophy. The broken victory gesture foretells the consequences of hostility. At the same time, it reveals the Taoist philosophical thought that the two poles are mutually generated and transformed. In the performing arts of Chinese Peking Opera, we attach great importance to the realm of "martial arts singing", which reflects the differences between our traditional culture and western culture, and also reflects the character and philosophy of China people. If these philosophical realms can be applied to our design creativity, it may be the highest realm of design creativity.

Fourth, the value of design and the responsibility of designers.

Design not only meets people's material needs, but also brings people spiritual enjoyment. While bringing practical value, people pay more attention to the symbolic meanings such as symbols, feelings, temperament and beliefs conveyed by consumer design, and the cultural value of design is more prominent. With the rapid development of the world commodity economy, design has become a marketing tool, and a large number of production and consumption have greatly wasted the limited resources of the earth. Driven by utilitarianism, commercial grandiose design misleads the public's aesthetic and value orientation, and the commercial value of design is infinitely exaggerated, thus causing the deviation between design goals and cultural values. Western traditional philosophy is a view of nature with opposition between subject and object. "People-oriented" and "anthropocentrism" were once great ideas, and their practice built modern civilization. However, with the development of capitalist productive forces, individual "people" gradually replaced human "people", and capital became the invisible hand to dominate the world, which led to various problems in the above design. China's traditional philosophy of "harmony between man and nature" is of great guiding significance to this issue, which is helpful for our design to dispel the arrogance and greed of anthropocentrists in humanism and rebuild the ecological relationship between man and nature.

Contemporary human society has entered the stage of sustainable development. Designers must consider the single design object in the whole system of man, man and things, man and nature from the perspective of organic whole, bring design into the philosophy of human survival and development, reconsider and examine it, and lead a reasonable lifestyle by solving practical problems and controlling the future social development trend. This is the responsibility and working method of a qualified designer.

abstract

When it comes to philosophy, I always think of a famous saying of Marx: "Any real philosophy is the essence of the spirit of our own times". Throughout the long history of China, each historical era has its own design culture and mainstream thoughts. However, our design development is not optimistic. Western design ideas are unscrupulously eroding the local culture of China, and the design philosophy and creative culture of the Chinese nation for thousands of years are gradually forgotten and have not played their due role. When "the more national, the more cosmopolitan" has become a common knowledge, many contemporary designers often learn the tradition only by processing, modifying, copying and splicing traditional symbols. There is no enthusiasm and patience to find and discover those national marks that are rooted in our hearts and preserved in the carrier of traditional culture and cannot be erased or taken away. Nowadays, in a small "global village", the inheritance and development of culture are often complementary, and the cultural heritage of each country has become a world cultural heritage. Therefore, under the influence of philosophy, it is also the responsibility of contemporary China designers to better complete the transmission and dissemination of traditional culture.
