"Intention" is the essence of design, so design life can be realized; Design thinking will help you design your life more satisfactorily, interestingly, creatively and perhaps more meaningfully.
This is my speech at the opening ceremony of the Graduate School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley on 20 10. It's abridged, but my advice is the same: start designing your life.
I am a designer. My school is very different from yours. I was trained as a full-time designer in your school to design daily necessities. I learned how to use my skills to create products that are more pleasing to the eye, easier to use and more attractive-I have been doing this for the first few years. The only problem is that most of the designed products are scrapped in a few months and years, filling the garbage dump.
But I'm lucky. I found that I can use design skills to solve various problems, which may have a great impact on the world once solved. Compared with me, what you have learned here is quite different from what you will experience in the next 30 years, and there is nothing you can do about it. But you can be prepared. My friend Pinker talked about this problem in The Adventures of Johnny Bunker.
He said that "intention" is a strategy to strike a balance between positively influencing your future and giving up unnecessary sense of control. I think "intention" is the essence of design, so I think design life can be realized.
I don't want to paint a perfect blueprint for your life. Designers sometimes do this. We created a perfect picture for the possible future and hid it under a black cloth. With a click, we tore off the cloth, expecting customers' shock and wonder, and then hoping that they would realize our vision perfectly. It may be possible to design cars and houses like this, but it is definitely not suitable for design life. But I believe that design thinking will help you design your life more satisfactorily, interestingly, creatively and perhaps meaningfully. Consider the following points: don't ask "what", ask "why"
We are used to accepting the immediate problem-the homework to be completed recently, the next business project. Designers are used to being stupid on this issue. They may even ask: Why do you ask this question?
This is because they know how stupid it is to pour their creativity into answering the wrong questions. Therefore, before solving problems with creativity, spend more time to find the right problems. Open Your Eyes
Most of the time in life, we don't notice the things that are really important. I believe many of you have relatives who are unhappy because of us! The more familiar we are with something, the easier it is to take it for granted, so we miss insight and inspiration, and we can't enjoy it.
Excellent design thinkers are good at observation. Excellent design thinkers observe the ordinary and produce insights from it. Try to get into the habit of stopping to observe actions or objects every day, just like a detective observes a crime scene. Why is the manhole cover round? Why should I go to work dressed like this? How far away from the person in front when waiting in line? What happens if you are color blind?
If you watch carefully, you will be amazed at the inspiration you get from these ordinary things.

Draw what you observe and what you think. You can draw a sketch or take photos with your mobile phone. Drawing pictures allows us to look at problems from different angles, not just relying on words and numbers.
Pictures provide context and contain other related things, thus showing a complete idea. Drawing forces you to decide what you really want. Don't worry, you can't draw, just draw. Develop other people's ideas
Leonardo da Vinci's sketches not only contain his own ideas, but also many other inventors and engineers. He took these ideas as the starting point of his own thinking. Picasso often bases his masterpieces on the works of other painters.
Good ideas will evolve. They don't pop out of a genius's head and take shape. Ignore your professor's boasting! Creativity is a social activity, so don't hesitate to stand on others' shoulders. Just remember to write down the credit to them at the right time. Look for alternatives
