The predecessor of Gulangyu Nazhai Hotel is the former residence of Zeng Shangyuan, the founder of Daqian Hotel, one of the three early hotels in Xiamen. The building has been bearing for a hundred years and has been washed away.

This polyhedral structure is different from most of the surrounding Nanyang or European architectural styles, so it is called "Diamond Building" when it is completed.
