Dalian Foreign Studies University has made remarkable progress in teaching and research. Professor Sun Yuhua, the president, won the first prize of 100 famous teachers in colleges and universities by the Ministry of Education. The comprehensive courses of basic Japanese and basic Russian in dalian university of foreign languages were rated as provincial-level excellent courses in 2003, basic French and advanced Russian as provincial-level excellent courses in 2004 and advanced Russian as national-level excellent courses in 2004.

The teaching reform in this school has achieved remarkable results. At present, it has won 9 provincial teaching achievement awards, including national excellent course 1, provincial excellent course 10 and first prize of national teaching courseware 1.

The school is a domestic and foreign examination institution directly under the Ministry of Education, a designated training base for overseas students, a Chinese language program institution of the SCO University, a Chinese-Russian university student exchange base of the Ministry of Education, a national Chinese international promotion base, a China government scholarship student receiving unit of the Ministry of Education, China International Youth Training Center, a 10,000-person plan college of Hong Kong universities, a full-time teacher reserve school of the National Confucius Institute, a key research base of humanities and social sciences in Liaoning Province, an innovative experimental area of international foreign language talent training mode in Liaoning Province, and more than 20 professional test sites designated by the Ministry of Education. The school was rated as a civilized unit by the Liaoning Provincial People's Government in 2004, the first batch of safe and civilized campuses by the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education in 2005, and the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education was excellent in 2007. In June 2009, the Russian World Foundation set up a Russian center in the school, and in September 2065, excellent undergraduates were recommended to study for a master's degree without examination.

From 2002 to 2006, a total of 37 graduates from Dalian Foreign Studies University became "diplomats", setting a record for the largest number of universities outside China. Since 1973, its 69 "diplomats" disciples have spread all over the world and become China's overseas consuls and counsellors. "The language practical ability is strong and the foundation is solid.
