Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) was born in a remote town in southern Alabama shortly after the end of World War II. He was born mentally retarded with an IQ of only 75. However, his mother is a strong-willed woman. She often encourages Forrest Gump to "be a blessed fool" and asks him to strive for self-improvement.
