Cai E has been married twice in his life. His original wife Liu Xinying, also called Liu Xiazhen, has three daughters after marriage. The eldest daughter Cai Julian, the second daughter Cai Fulian, and four daughters. Cai Fulian and four young girls died successively, and only the eldest daughter Cai Julian grew up. Cai Julian later married Shi Chaobai and had two sons and two daughters, but they all lived abroad and few people knew about them.
The second marriage was with Pan Huiying, who also received advanced western education. After marriage, there are two sons and one daughter, the eldest son Cai Duan, the second son Cai Yongning and the daughter Cai. Cai Duan 1937 graduated from Fu Jen Catholic University in Beiping. He was a press officer of the National Government, a consul of the South African Consulate, a member of the China Democratic League and a member of the Eighth Committee of the China People's Political Consultative Conference. He died in Beijing on 1997. The second son, Cai Yongning, also graduated from Fu Jen Catholic University in Beiping and worked in a bank after graduation.
