The Council of the University of Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as "the Council") passed a resolution on 20/KOOC-0/7/KOOC-0/2/KOOC-0/6, and appointed Professor Zhang Xiang as the President of the University of Hong Kong/KOOC-0/6 for a term of five years, which will be replaced on 20/KOOC-0/8/KOOC-0/6.
According to public information, Professor Zhang Xiang 1963 was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province in February, graduated from the Physics Department of Nanjing University, and then went to study in the United States. According to the resume of the website of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zhang Xiang is an American citizen, an expert in optoelectronic information materials and devices, and one of the pioneers in the fields of information superstructure materials and surface plasmon photonics. /kloc-0 received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996, was elected as an academician of the National Academy of Engineering in 20 10, and was elected as an academician of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan Province Province in 20 12.
Professor Zhang Xiang is a professor at the Ge Shouren Foundation at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 2003, he has served as the director of the Center for Nanoscience and Engineering, and 20 14-20 16 as the director of the Materials Science Department of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Professor Zhang Xiang is an internationally renowned scholar with outstanding academic achievements and won many excellent awards. Its recent award-winning projects include: 20 17 AC Eringen Award of Engineering Science Society, 20 16 Max Born Award of American Optometry Society, and 20 16 Julius Springer Applied Physics Award.
On the day of 15, Professor Zhang Xiang met with Hong Kong university students, faculty and alumni at several consultation meetings, and attended the meetings of the Board of Education and the School Council to explain his vision and ambition for HKU and answer questions.
Professor Li, Chairman of the School Committee and Chairman of the Selection Committee, welcomed Professor Zhang Xiang as the president and hoped that members would support him in leading the university to meet various opportunities and challenges.
Previously, on February 2, 2007, official website of HKU announced that Professor Peter William Mathieson had resigned as president, and the school committee would conduct global recruitment to select a new president. On the same day, the official website of Edinburgh University announced that Peter William Mathieson would become the next president of Edinburgh University.
