1997 replaced Chen Yiming as the head coach of Guangzhou Sun God Team, but after 1998 13 rounds, he was dismissed because of his poor record, and Guangzhou Sun God was also relegated that year. Since then, Mai Chao has been the head coach of the second and third teams in Guangzhou.

In July, 20001,Mai Chao formed the National Youth Team as the head coach. In February 2002, in preparation for the U 19 Asian Youth Championship qualifiers, the coaching staff of the National Youth Team was reorganized, with Wang Baoshan as the head coach and Mai Chao and Li Li as the new assistant coaches.
