Legal analysis: In rural areas, the term of office is three years, and a general election will be held after the term expires. Village directors, deputy directors and other village officials can generally be re-elected, but the maximum re-election is no more than three sessions and no more than nine years.

Legal basis: Article 58 of the Organic Law of Local People's Congresses and Local People's Governments in People's Republic of China (PRC). The term of office of the people's governments of provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, autonomous prefectures, counties, autonomous counties, cities and municipal districts is five years. The term of office of the people's governments of townships, nationality townships and towns is three years.
