Seminar theme
Raymond Williams believes that culture is a way of life, which reflects the current social, cultural ideas and ideologies. The culture that Williams refers to is not the traditional social values that everyone can't touch, nor the unattainable elegant culture or the top-down governance culture, but the daily life and culture that ordinary people can feel and even touch, that is, the so-called popular and popular culture. From the perspective of cultural studies, popular culture reflects the experiences, feelings and ideologies of different gender, race, class and age groups in society. Raymond Williams said this emotional structure is the foundation of social structure. From the perspective of political economy, this kind of culture can show the manipulation and restriction of different political and economic factors in society.
Among many popular cultures, TV plays are the most continuous daily life and culture. It is not only the theme and discourse of our daily conversation, but also the "time media" closest to the social context. The workshop of Communication and Society 20 1 1 chooses TV series as the core topic, which not only discusses how TV can reflect and express social problems related to China's society, culture, politics and economy from the perspective of text and production, but also explains the public's interpretation of TV series from the perspective of consumption. The TV dramas we refer to include fashion dramas, soap operas, romantic movies, time dramas and historical dramas with main themes. Watching these programs not only involves different levels of China TV viewers, but also covers different viewing forms, such as online video and pay TV. The theoretical framework of the articles accepted at the seminar includes cultural studies, critical theory and political economy. We also encourage articles to deeply explain the situation and times brought by TV dramas (for theoretical and methodological issues such as situation, please refer to Communication and Society 10 and1/Interview with Lawrence Grosberg). However, the workshop requires that the content of the article should go beyond the papers based solely on cultural criticism and text analysis, and we pay more attention to the papers with empirical data and theoretical creativity. Our college will collect and publish the papers of scholars who participated in the seminar into a special collection of academic journals or edit them into a special volume. Experts and scholars who are interested in this topic are welcome to conceive a research plan, write an outline of the paper, and apply for the visiting scholar program of the School of Communication of CUHK University according to the following procedures.
