After the efforts of three generations of craftsmen, it was completed in 90 years in the 19th year of Zhenyuan, Tang Dezong (AD 803).

The construction of the Buddha statue began in the early kaiyuan year of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (AD 7 13). When the Buddha reaches the shoulder, the monk Haitong dies. After Haitong's death, the project was once interrupted. Many years later, Zhang Qiu and Joan, the messengers of Jian Xichuan, donated money, and Haitong's apprentice led craftsmen to continue to build the Giant Buddha. The first layer means: repay kindness. All sentient beings are kind to us, and the greatest kindness is the teacher. Buddha and Bodhisattva are our teachers. Only when we accept the teachings of Buddha and Bodhisattva can we truly realize our dharma, body and wisdom. Therefore, to support Buddha and Bodhisattva is to commemorate the teacher and be grateful.
The second meaning is the most important: meeting Si Qi. Buddha is made by an ordinary person. We should support his image and remind us to learn from him and become a Buddha. We should learn from the Buddha's intentions to make wishes, to live, to work, to do things, to treat people and things, and to learn from the Buddha in everything. If you can't treat Buddha and Bodhisattva as gods, it is superstition and wrong. If we turn Buddhism into religion, it is not education.
