Prishvan belongs to the older generation of writers in the former Soviet Union. He was influenced by Gorky, but he chose to write about nature instead of following Gorky's footsteps. As early as 1907, he published "Where Birds Are Not Surprised" and "Black Arabia". 1925, "Bielianjie Yongquan" was published and later renamed as "Calendar of Nature".
