In order to facilitate efficient and centralized coordinated management, on June 9, 1997, the Shanghai Municipal Government formally established the Shanghai International Airport Holding (Group) Company to implement unified management of Shanghai's civil aviation airports (including Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport under construction). Shanghai Pudong international airport
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is one of the three major international airports in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). It is also known as the three major international airports in China together with Beijing Capital International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located in the coastal zone on the south bank of the Yangtze River estuary in Pudong, Shanghai, covering an area of more than 40 square kilometers, about 30 kilometers away from the center of Shanghai and about 40 kilometers away from Hongqiao Airport.
The first phase of Pudong Airport started in June 1997 and was completed and opened to traffic in September 1999. IATA code SHA, located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, is about 13 kilometers away from the city center. Before the completion of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Hongqiao Airport was the busiest airport in China. The airport has runways and taxiways. The runway is 3400 meters long and 57.6 meters wide, and the apron is about 486,000 square meters, with a total of 66 seats. The airport terminal covers an area of 82,000 square meters and is equipped with 15 waiting hall, 18 VIP room and 15 luggage transmission system. Hongqiao Airport mainly undertakes the functions of domestic departure, entry and alternate international flights, with an average daily take-off and landing of about 540 flights. In 2007, the passenger throughput of Hongqiao International Airport reached 22.63 million passengers, ranking fourth among domestic civil airports in China, fifth in cargo and mail throughput of 388,904 tons, and fifth in take-off and landing187,045 sorties.
