A good resume, 15 seconds is impressive.
-Interview with Xu, Recruitment Director of Schlumberger China District.
A good resume is very important for finding a job, and sometimes it even plays a decisive role. So what kind of resume is attractive? What kind of resume is the most important? Is the resume as long as possible? In the process of writing your resume, what else should you consider besides your own narrative needs? On these issues, this website interviewed Xu, the recruitment director of Schlumberger, a multinational company. Teacher Xu put forward many sincere suggestions, and we hope to give more or less inspiration to friends who are looking for jobs.
Reporter: Schlumberger recruits a large number of fresh graduates every year. Can you give some advice to graduates on resume writing?
Xu: From the perspective of resume screeners, it is very important to write a resume, but many people ignore it. Because we receive hundreds of resumes every time we recruit, and we don't spend much time on each resume.
Reporter: What do you mainly look at in a short time?
Actually, it depends on what a resume can convey in such a short time. It is very important for a resume to make an impression within 15 seconds. A simple way to test whether a resume is attractive is to give it to someone and get it back after 15 seconds. Then you ask him how much he knows about it and how much key information he got from it.
Reporter: What kind of resume is a good resume?
Xu: There is no fixed format for a resume, but in the process of writing, we should consider what impression this resume will leave on the readers, whether it can be distinguished from others' resumes, and what is highlighted in the resume.
Resumes should be as concise as possible, not as long as possible. If a resume is written on five pages, we may only spend two or three seconds per page. We usually see some resumes. There is a big title at the top, with the word "resume" written on it, next to a name five times smaller than its font, and there are many things behind it. Such a resume is not a very good resume. People who read resumes will waste two seconds reading headlines first, and then they have to try to find useful information from many fonts.
The most important thing is to be realistic in your resume. Repetition in resumes is very serious, especially in English resumes. Many people write the same sentence and the same cover letter beautifully, but it usually doesn't give people a good first impression, because it is a shared thing. We can quickly find out whether this resume is written by him through English conversation. If his English ability can't reach this level, but his writing is good, we think this person is dishonest. We may have a better impression of a resume that is not well written or even has wrong sentences than this resume.
Reporter: Will you meet many people with fake resumes?
Xu: More! Interestingly, in some aspects, everyone writes a lot of things in the same way, such as personality, many people will write "optimistic and cheerful", "innovative spirit" and so on, and everyone will write "fluent" in language ability. As long as it is good, write it down. But in fact, when we ask specific questions, we can tell the truth from the false. In fact, what people think is a good thing is not that the more you write, the better. It's like covering up the truth. Remember, the more you write, the more chances you will be asked, and the easier it will be to expose yourself. Be sure to fill in your resume truthfully.
Reporter: Why do you think there are so many false and exaggerated things on your resume?
Xu: Many students have vague goals when choosing jobs, and they don't know much about the companies and positions they are applying for, and they don't know whether they are suitable for themselves. This is the most important reason. Many resumes are made for every company, without individuality and pertinence. As long as it's good, it's all written. At first glance, you can know that it's delivered everywhere and cast a net generally. Some people ask what this company will do after coming, and some of them are inappropriate at first sight. He's just taking a risk. I want to tell you that this is not only bad for the image of the applicant, but also bad for the image of the school, wasting his time, wasting my time, and possibly letting the really suitable person miss the opportunity.

Perspective on how hiring managers screen resumes

"We have put your resume in the company's talent pool."
In the process of preparing resume materials, choosing resume format and starting to make resumes, there is a saying that you can be a precept: your resume is scanned, not read (yris). Why should job seekers learn this? Because that's what recruiters do.
"Screening, screening, naturally screening first." When recruiters screen resumes, they can get the scanning results in about 5 seconds as long as they turn on the "electric eye". A well-written resume should be kept in the pile first, and then read it slowly later; A badly written resume (with irregular format and untidy printing) will be thrown into the trash can without hesitation. Trash cans are used to being called "talent pool" by recruiters, so your reply may be "We have put your resume in the company's" talent pool ",and we will consider it when there is a suitable opportunity in the future".
In any well-known big company, hundreds of people hand in resumes every day. If your resume is poorly written, they won't keep it for you at all. Because these companies believe that if a person can't even write a resume to promote himself, he will not be able to impress customers and win orders in the future. The company certainly doesn't want to say something vague and completely incomprehensible.
Resume should be limited to one page.
YRIS also explained that never write too much and keep it within one page, because no one will read your resume seriously. On the one hand, the resume should be concise; On the other hand, your resume should be wonderful. You will ask, "What if the resume is well written and the recruiter doesn't see it for a short time?" This kind of worry is not entirely necessary, because this is what recruiters "eat", so you should never question their professionalism and efficiency.
If you suspect that the recruiter can't see the quality of your resume, there are only two explanations: First, you don't know the nature of the recruiter's work. Suppose you are a taxi driver who often goes in and out of the streets of Beijing. Naturally, you know the hutongs in Beijing like the back of your hand, but ordinary pedestrians will find it difficult to remember them. Second, explain that you are not familiar with the writing format of professional resume. Many big bosses in high positions in the United States can point out some mistakes even if they change a font, miss a comma and add an extra space when reading what their subordinates write, because they have a high professional quality and have developed a pair of "critical eyes". Your questioning of his professionalism undoubtedly shows that you don't understand this company and this industry. Even if you enter such a company, if you don't pay attention to promotion, it is difficult to become a qualified member of them.
Mr. Wang Tuoxuan, former human resources manager of Procter & Gamble and executive director of Tuosheng Human Resources Management Consulting Company, said:
China people are good at "choosing words and making sentences" and like to use exaggerated techniques and beautiful and moving words. As long as they think it may add luster to their faces, they will "be handy" regardless of the consequences. In the interview, as recruiters, although we will ask questions according to the requirements of recruitment, if the applicant's resume mentions some novel topics, outstanding achievements or obviously illogical work content, we will also attach great importance to it and ask clearly. In other words, "any sentence in the resume may become a topic in the interview."
Fabricated facts are never equal to facts. A lie repeated a thousand times may become the truth, but the recruiter will never read your resume repeatedly, so your lie will not become the "truth". Moreover, you dare not let people read this resume repeatedly, because the more times you read it, the greater the flaw you expose.
