One of Hu Kaijun's most important research achievements is to discover and explain theoretically for the first time the continuous spectral region of Lyman α rays on the short wave side of red high-shift quasars, and there is a strong correlation between the rich absorption lines of Lyman α, Lyman β and Lyman γ, thus proving that there are countless primitive hydrogen clouds with low metal abundance in the galaxy space of the early universe. This hydrogen cloud was later recognized by the international astrophysics community and called Lyman alpha forest. The existence and evolution of this hydrogen cloud is of great significance to the theory of galaxy formation and the study of the early universe, and it is still a hot spot in the forefront of international astronomical research. One of the first key projects of the Hubble Space Telescope in the United States is the study of quasar absorption lines.

Usually, the level and value of a scientific paper is measured by the number of citations by international peers. Hu Kaijun's paper is widely quoted by international peers. According to incomplete statistics, the number of citations exceeds 100, and it has been cited about 20 times a year in recent years. Hu Kaijun presided over the establishment of the Quasar Sky Survey Laboratory. He and his colleagues took the lead in conducting a survey of quasar prism in China, and successfully implemented the multilateral cooperation plan of "Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan Province -BATC survey of the sky".

In addition, Hu Kaijun also studied the evolution of metal abundance in high redshift system, developed a method to identify absorption line system, and proved the existence of high redshift galaxies by analyzing the absorption line system of quasar spectrum. Through the determination and comparison of element abundance, the evolution of chemical composition of galaxies over billions of years is revealed. [ 1]
