1926 March 18, more than 5,000 people from all walks of life in Beijing, led by China, Li Dazhao and others, gathered in front of Tiananmen Square to protest against Japanese imperialism's plundering of China's sovereignty. After the meeting, they went to Duan government to petition. When Duan went abroad temporarily, the guards shot, causing 47 deaths and 150 injuries. Liu Hezhen and Yang Dequn, students of National Beijing Normal University, were killed in this tragedy.
In order to commemorate the martyrs and carry forward the patriotic tradition, the Beijing Municipal People's Government listed the location of the executive government in the "March 18th" tragedy as a key cultural relics protection unit in Beijing, and Dongcheng District listed it as a patriotic education base for young people.
