The vice president of the United States is the first heir to the president. Once the president dies, resigns or is removed from office, the vice president immediately succeeds, so the vice president has always been called "only a heartbeat away" from the president. In American history, eight vice presidents succeeded because the president died in office, and only 1 (Gerald Ford) succeeded because the president resigned. Because no president was removed (Richard Nixon resigned himself) and no vice president succeeded him.
The vice president of the United States is also the speaker of the United States Senate. When the voting result of the US Senate is tied, the vote of the Speaker of the Senate becomes the most crucial vote.
