Weifang, formerly named Wei County, with an area of 15859 square kilometers, is the transportation hub of Shandong Province. Located in the middle of Shandong Peninsula, it is 35 41'-37 26' north latitude and10810'-1'east longitude. It is the birthplace of kites, the world-famous kite capital and the headquarters of the International Kite Federation. With two famous vegetable bases in China, it is one of the large vegetable producing areas in northern China. Weifang borders Qingdao and Yantai in the east, Zibo and Dongying in the west, Linyi and Rizhao in the south and Laizhou Bay in the Bohai Sea in the north. Weifang is the transportation hub of Shandong Peninsula, bordering the hinterland of Shandong and the throat leading to the peninsula. Weifang Port is a national first-class open port, while Yangkou Port is a national second-class open port. Weifang Airport has opened flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Haikou, and is one of the four major air mail processing centers in China.
