After 50 years of artistic experience, I have provided some quick methods for collectors. When you can't identify the abstract elements such as a painter's personality, genius and knowledge, and you can't judge the quality of his works, I suggest you read his literature, his writing skills and his writing level first. Look at his comments, essays, novels and poems. If there are no literary works, you should doubt his cultural background.
From ancient times to the present, there is not a good painter who is not good at poetry and doesn't like writing poetry. Even if you look at your resume and business cards, you can taste a painter's cultural taste. Resumes with many titles are long in length, and most of them have few connotations. Second, you seal the painting first and only look at the inscription on it. If the handwriting is bad, the painting will not be better. From ancient times to the present, there is not a great painter who is not a calligrapher. Calligraphy modeling is inaccurate, lines are not effective, and words do not rhyme. Where does the rhythm of pen and ink in painting come from? Third, look at the matching of colors and the blending of pen and ink. It is not uncommon for contemporary writers to write a few strokes. The artistic conception and brushwork are of course not bad, but they lack long-term experience in sketching, using colors, using pens and ink, and the pictures are mostly simple, skinny and comic. As a collector, it is relatively easy to distinguish literature from calligraphy by intuition, but it is much more difficult to distinguish colored pen and ink, only by your feeling of the picture.
For expensive collections, it is still necessary to hire experts, but beware of the peers of "experts", who are often hostile to the master's good works. Of course, this awareness of self-protection is understandable, but it confuses the identification of the collection and misleads the audience. Therefore, it is very difficult to identify the collection. It is precisely because of the difficulty that many people stay away from it, and few people dare to eat crabs. But the calligraphy and painting collection is not a thunder pool. On the contrary, it is a particularly promising investment.
