Zhang Xun, born in 709, was the county magistrate of Zhenyuan (now Bozhou West, Anhui Province) during the Anshi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty.

In the winter of the 14th year of Tianbao (755), An Shi Rebellion broke out. In the fifteenth year of Tianbao, Zhang Xun rose up against the Yan army, and more than a thousand people responded. With ChanYuFu (now ShanDong Shan County), Jia Weiben and others marched into Qiu Yong. And broke through Yan Jun many times here, and held fast to Chengwei.

At this time, there were about 2000 defenders in the city, and 40 thousand troops outside the city besieged the city. Zhang Xun left 1000 people guarding the city, led 1000 people by himself, divided into several teams, and suddenly rushed out of the city. Although the Yan army was numerous, it was sudden and chaotic. Zhang Xun took the lead, eating with armor, fighting with wounds, and sticking to Qiu Yong for more than 60 days.

Qiu Yong's patrolling has realized the real "grass man borrows an arrow" in history. After a long battle, there are no arrows against the enemy in the army. In the evening, Zhang Xun ordered the soldiers to dress the scarecrow in black and slowly put it down from the city. Yan Jun shot an arrow, only to find it was a scarecrow in the morning. In a few days, Zhang Xun got hundreds of thousands of arrows. Later, when Yan Jun saw that the scarecrow was going to town at night, he stopped shooting arrows. Zhang Xun chose five hundred warriors and went down to the city in the evening. Take advantage of the enemy's unprepared, suddenly fight, and the enemy is defeated.

Later, when the timber in the city was exhausted, Zhang Xun made a gesture of abandoning the city and said to the enemy generals, "If you want to lead the people away, please retreat and let me escape." The enemy general didn't know what the plan was, so he led the army back 60 miles. Seeing the enemy losing ground, Zhang Xun led all the troops in the city to tear down Yan Barracks within 30 miles outside the city and bring the timber back to the city.

One day, Zhang Xun came up with another plan and sent a message to the enemy general: "You need this city, and you can have thirty horses back. I'll run away with the horse. Please use the city as an excuse. " So, the enemy sent 30 horses to Zhang Xun, ready to enter the city the next day. Zhang Xun gave 30 horses to 30 warriors and agreed: "When the enemy arrives, everyone will take one." The next day, the enemy generals came to the gate, saw that Zhang Xun had not abandoned the city, and began to blame Zhang Xun. Zhang Xun said, "I want to go, but the soldiers won't. What can I do? " The enemy generals know the trick. At this time, 30 riders in the city fought their way out, captured 14 enemy leaders alive and beheaded 100. The enemy retreated to Chenliu (now Kaifeng, Henan) and dared not attack again for a while.

In December, the enemy will give up Qiu Yong and lead 20,000 cavalry in order to capture Ningling and cut off the back road. Therefore, Zhang Xun voluntarily gave up Qiu Yong, led 300 horses and more than 3,000 soldiers eastward, and stuck to Ningling.

In the first month of the second year of Zhide (757), Suiyang was in a hurry. Zhang Xun decided to give up Ningling and defected to Xu Yuan, the prefect of Suiyang. There were 6,800 people after joining the army. Xu Yuan is in charge of logistics and Zhang Xun is in charge of operational command. The first battle was successful. /KLOC-On October 6th, Lien Chan captured more than 60 generals of Yan Jun and killed more than 20,000 people.

Knowing that Suiyang was difficult to capture in a short time, the enemy generals sent troops to cut all the wheat on the outskirts of Suiyang.

In the evening, Zhang Xun drummed in the city, and Yan Jun was on guard all night, but nothing happened. During the day off, Zhang Xun led more than ten generals, each with fifty riders. More than 50 people were beheaded and more than 5,000 people were wiped out.

Zhang Xun is to capture the enemy first and capture the king first, and shoot the deadly enemy with an arrow. But the soldiers don't know the enemy generals. Zhang Xun ordered wormwood to be cut into arrows and fired at the Yan army. Yan Bing, who was shot, thought that the arrows of the defenders had been shot, so he went to report to the enemy generals. Zhang Xun therefore recognized the enemy general and ordered Nan Jiyun to shoot with a bow. Nan Jiyun's arrow hit the left eye of the enemy general, who was seriously injured and the Yan army was in chaos. Zhang Xun led his troops out of the city to kill them and break the enemy. The enemy will run away wounded.

On the sixth day of July, Suiyang was besieged again. Yan Jun built a tall ladder and pushed it to the door. Zhang Xun cut three holes in the wall in advance, one hole hooked the ladder, one hole held the ladder, one hole was ignited and burned, and all the 200 elite soldiers on the ladder were burned to death; Yan Jun also built a hook car to attack the city, and Zhang Xun prepared a big log with an iron ring at the end. Use it to trap the hook car and pull it into the city; Yan Jun rebuilt the donkey cart to attack the city, and Zhang Xun poured molten iron on the donkey and burned it; Yan Jun piled up sandbags and wood to build steps, trying to climb the city. Zhang Xun sent people to secretly throw combustible materials such as Song Ming and hay on the steps every night, and set fire to them when the wind was downwind. The fire burned for more than 20 days.

The enemy will attack the city in various ways, but they have all been defused by Zhang Xun. No choice but to dig three trenches outside the city and besieged it for a long time.

At this point, the city has run out of food and grass. Zhang Xun sent general Nan Jiyun out of the city to ask for reinforcements, but all localities refused to send troops. When Nan Jiyun was killed again and returned to the city, he only had to catch up with hundreds of cows that had been robbed from Yan Jun.

The city is out of ammunition and food, but Suiyang is also a choke point and cannot be abandoned militarily. The city was besieged for a long time, and the defenders had no food and were forced to eat people.

About eating people in the city, Zi Tongzhi Jian contains:

The Book of the Old Tang Dynasty is recorded in more detail:

There are only two differences between the Book of the New Tang Dynasty and the Book of the Old Tang Dynasty: "The old, the weak, women and children can eat 30,000 mouthfuls" and "The city is broken, and the adherents stop at 400". You can imagine the horror at that time. I don't know how civilians who are eaten by their own people will feel before they die!

On the ninth day of October, the soldiers guarding the city were unable to go out, and the Yan army reached the top. Zhang Xun bowed to the west and said, "I'm exhausted. I can't report my life to your majesty. I should kill the enemy as a spectre! " Suiyang was broken. Zhang Xun, Nan Jiyun and other 36 people were killed. Zhang Xun was forty-nine years old. Xu Yuan was killed on the way to Luoyang.

Seven days later, Tang Jun reinforcements arrived and Suiyang recovered.

After Zhang Xun's death, Tang Suzong wrote to posthumously award Zhang Xun as the secretariat of Yangzhou, and hung his portrait on Lingyan Pavilion. In the folk, temples and shrines have been built everywhere. Taoism respects Zhang Xun as a "doctor of instrument protection", while Anxi, Fujian regards Zhang Xun as a goddess of tea protection and is called "Duke".

Zhang Xun fought in Qiu Yong, Ningling and Suiyang for 2 1 month, fought more than 400 times, beheaded more than 300 people, and wiped out the enemy 10. Saved the fertile Jianghuai area and contained a large number of enemy troops. "It is a great achievement to patrol the Jianghuai and hide the enemy's potential, and the world will not die."

Reading history at this point, I can't help but sigh. Zhang Xun's wisdom is not inferior to Zhuge's, but in history, Zhuge's wisdom is not praised by historians. Most of his stories are told by novelists, but Zhang Xun's guarding city is full of wisdom, but it is a true history. However, loyalty to the monarch has no benevolence, and human life is like dirt. It is also history for the army to eat people. If there is no record of running out of food and eating 30 thousand civilians, its reputation in history will be much greater than it is now.
