Li Yang was born in Urumqi, Xinjiang. When he was a child, he was very introverted. 1986 entered Lanzhou university. It was during that university that he invented Crazy English. After graduating from 1990, he continued to work in Northwest Institute of Electronic Equipment in Xi 'an, Shaanxi Province. He continued to practice English in this way, often standing on the roof of his office building and shouting English.
He began to popularize his methods on a large scale until 1994 founded Liyang Cliz English promotion studio. Today, his method is very popular in China and even becomes a celebrity. This method is also popular in other Asian countries. He speaks to 20 to 30,000 people and visits 15 cities on average every month. The income of a lecture can reach one million yuan. His company, Stone-Clitz, profited from crazy English books. He plans to open crazy Chinese offices in the United States and Europe to promote Chinese education in westerners.
His philosophy of language teaching may be political. He believes that learning English is the most important step to make China the most powerful country in the world. His personal motto is "inspire patriotism, advocate national spirit, conquer English and revitalize China". He is critical of China's education system and how it makes children lack self-confidence.
The documentary "Crazy English" filmed by the director in 2000 recorded some of Li's travels. Li didn't like the film and thought it distorted him. Z Hangyuan claimed that the film was neutral and portrayed him fairly.
