1973 won the Singapore Presidential Scholarship and the Singapore Armed Forces Scholarship to go to Cambridge University for further study. 1976 graduated and joined the Singapore Armed Forces. 1983 received a master's degree in public administration from Kennedy School of Administration, Harvard University. After returning to China, he served as Chief of Staff and Director of Joint Operations and Planning of Singapore Armed Forces. 1988 was promoted to brigadier general and resigned from the military in the same year. /kloc-0 was elected as a member of parliament in September, 1988, and was re-elected in the general elections of 199 1, 1997, 200 1 and 2006.
