He served as the governor of Zhejiang, Henan and Jiangxi provinces and lived in Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang Dynasties. In his later years, he paid homage to the university students in Tijen Pavilion, and then went to Taifu and posthumous title Wenda.

His essays "On North-South School of Calligraphy" and "On North Monument and South Post" are concise and concise, and they divide calligraphy into two schools: South School and North School. This is the first time in the history of calligraphy to systematically sort out the development of northern calligraphy.
Ruan Yuan's Personality Achievement
Ruan Yuan is not a man who yearns for fame. In his view, reading is more important than being an official. He once said, "Being an official means life. Only the writer is in his own hands and can't ignore it. " On the other hand, Ruan Yuan has a wide range of academic interests. He learned from hundreds of schools and dabbled in a wide range, covering many aspects such as Confucian classics, calligraphy and painting, epigraphy, astronomical calendar and so on.
Ruan Yuan inherited and developed Ganjia School, and paid attention to textual research and exegesis, which was an important representative of Yangzhou School. In his life, he wrote dozens of bibliographies, such as Notes to Thirteen Classics, Addenda to Three Poems, Annotations to Imperial Classics, Classic Compilation, Biography of People in the Region, Illustration of Examination, and Records of Stone Carvings in Guangdong and Zhejiang Provinces. All of them have high academic value and far-reaching influence on later generations.
Ruan Yuan also compiled some local chronicles, such as Jia Qing Jia Xing Fu Zhi and Guangdong Tong Zhi.
In addition, Ruan Yuan also attaches great importance to promoting learning and teaching. He founded Jingjing Jingshe in Gushan, Hangzhou, Xuehaitang Academy in Guangdong, and creatively implemented the senior system in the academy, which was followed by many academies.
In the process of academy teaching, Ruan Yuan also put forward the famous four-step reading method, that is, sentence by sentence reading, proofreading, copying and writing. This reading training method is obviously different from the rigid reading method. Even today, it still has many merits.
