Wei, then the commander of the Kuomintang's northeast "suppression general", had close contacts with the Eighth Route Army during the Anti-Japanese War. Some supporters of the Kuomintang claimed that Wei caused the failure of the Liaoshen Campaign, so he was called a "common spy". Then, how did the famous "common spy" Wei become the commander of the Northeast "suppression general"?
1948, Chen Cheng, then the commander of the Northeast General Suppression, was defeated by the Northeast Field Army within five months. 18 liberated the city with an area of 63,000 square kilometers and a population of 5.5 million (including 30 generals' palaces). Many representatives of the National Assembly of Nanking Kuomintang even shouted the slogan "Kill Chen Cheng to thank the people of China".
Although Chiang Kai-shek won't really kill his first-class loyal minister, Chen Cheng, the Northeast will definitely break away from Chen Cheng. However, at that time, all the major war zones in the country were very tight, and the remaining experienced senior generals trusted by Chiang Kai-shek could not get away. Only Wei, one of the "Five Tiger Generals", is the right candidate. He has just returned from abroad.
However, the national army in the northeast was already in a state of collapse. As "the most capable general in the national army (Stilwell)", how could Wei fail to see that going to the Northeast at this time was Chen Cheng's "whipping boy", so he didn't go anyway. Chiang Kai-shek, who knew that he was indefensible, forced Wei to take office in Northeast China, so Chen Cheng tried to persuade Wei to take office.
At that time, if Chen Cheng couldn't get away in the northeast, I'm afraid it would really be "Xie Guomin". But it's hard to say that Wei should be his whipping boy, so Chen Cheng asked his wife Tan Xiang to go to Wei's home every day to cry with Wei's wife Han Quanhua, hoping to impress Wei, and Chiang Kai-shek also persuaded him in various ways.
Finally, Wei put forward four conditions: first, if the northeast falls, Wei does not have to bear the responsibility; Second, the Kuomintang cannot give up the northeast; Third, mobilize three or four armies to strengthen Jinzhou in three to four months; Fourth, use the air force to transport supplies to Changchun, Shenyang and Jinzhou. Wei said that only when Chiang Kai-shek agreed to these four conditions would he go to the Northeast.
Chiang Kai-shek agreed to all four conditions of Wei on the spot, thus making Wei take office in Northeast China. However, when Wei Yi came to power, the plan to strengthen Jinzhou and air transportation fell through. Then, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Wei to withdraw from Jinzhou and abandon the Northeast. After the Liaoshen Campaign, Chiang Kai-shek dismissed Wei for investigation on the grounds of "missing the military opportunity".
