Jun Xiao was born in July, 1907, Qianpangou Village, Shenjiatai Town, Yixian County, Liaoning Province. Because his family is poor, he only went to primary school. 1925 started his military career and served as a trainee officer and military assistant. His writing career began in the army.

1932, Xiao Jun officially started literary creation in Harbin under the pen name Saburo, and carried out literary activities together with underground members of the Communist Party of China and progressive youth. After nearly a year's hard work, Xiao Jun completed the novel "The Country" in August, which showed the anti-Japanese struggle of the Northeast People's Revolutionary Army.

This book has won unanimous praise from the progressive literary and art circles and the progressive masses, and is called the literary banner against Japanese imperialist aggression. Lu Xun specially prefaces this book. He wrote, "I have read several books.

After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Xiao Jun has been engaged in amateur literature and art teaching and participated in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement. 1940, came to Yan 'an. During his five years in Yan 'an, he successively served as director of Yan 'an Branch of Ren Zhonghua All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, director of Lu Xun Institute, editor-in-chief of Literature and Art Daily and teacher of Lu Xun College of Arts and Sciences. He also attended the Yan 'an Forum on Literature and Art. 。

After liberation, Xiao Jun continued to engage in literary research and creation. During this period, his works include the Peking Opera King Wu, the novel Mine in May and the novel Old Times.

During the Cultural Revolution, Xiao Jun was persecuted and imprisoned for eight years. After smashing the Gang of Four, he returned to the literary world, edited more than 800 old poems and annotated the letters of Xiao Hong and Lu Xun. 1979, Xiao Jun attended the Fourth Congress of Writers and Artists in China and was elected as a member of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and a director of the Chinese Writers Association.
