In ancient times, it refers to the official garden. In modern times, it generally refers to the public area built and operated by the government as a natural viewing area for the public to rest and play. In tourist attractions, it is usually referred to as "garden" for short.

The definition in the Code for Park Design is: "A park is a public green space with perfect facilities and a good greening environment for the public to visit, watch, rest, carry out scientific and cultural activities and exercise." It has the functions of improving urban ecology, fire prevention and refuge.

Parks can generally be divided into city parks, forest parks, theme parks and special parks.
