After Ma Kechang got married, she continued to study in Wuhan University. Cao Zhihui, her beloved wife, returned to Honghuaji, Xihua County in the autumn of 1949, and then went to the county to teach, subsidizing Ma Kechang's study expenses with her meager income. With the wholehearted support of Cao Zhihui, Ma Kechang stayed on as a teacher after graduating from Wuhan University. Then, he was sent to the postgraduate class of Law Department of Renmin University of China in Beijing. As the first graduate student of New China, he systematically studied and studied the Soviet criminal law theory under the guidance of Professor Besterova, a Soviet criminal jurist.
