2. Gaozhou is an important place of origin, prosperity and inheritance of sorghum culture. In the first year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368), Gaozhou Prefecture was established, which was the first of the four Xiazhou States in Guangdong. In the Republic of China, it was withdrawn from the state to stay in the county. 1June, 1993, the county was withdrawn to set up a city (county level). Gaozhou was founded in the 18th year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (598). From the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China, Gaozhou has always been the political, economic, cultural and military center of western Guangdong.
