Lin Xi of Yulin Watermelon and Yulin Watermelon
Why is the "Yulin" brand watermelon in Wenling, Zhejiang sweet? Why did "Yulin" watermelon grow all over the country in 15 provinces and cities, and then went abroad to plant in Myanmar? Because there is such a person in Wenling, he is silently dedicating his youth to the sweetness of Yulin watermelon and the cultivation and promotion of Yulin watermelon. She was the fifth top-notch talent in Taizhou commended by Taizhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government at the end of 2006, and Lin Yi, deputy stationmaster of Wenling Agricultural Technology Extension Station, was praised as the "Watermelon Queen" by melon farmers.

In the early 1990s, Wenling introduced a new watermelon variety Zaojia "8424" from Academician Wu Mingzhu of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This kind of watermelon is of good quality, but it also has many shortcomings. First of all, its disease resistance is not strong, especially if it is cultivated in the open air or covered with plastic film. When flowering and fruiting are in the rainy season in the south, watermelons are prone to illness, and watermelons planted by melon farmers sometimes fail to harvest. Secondly, it is easy to crack melons.

Aiming at the problems of wet and rainy in Wenling area, low watermelon quality and low yield benefit, Lin Biao began to study high-yield cultivation techniques. She went deep into the fields and instructed melon farmers to adopt small arch shed cultivation first, then develop into greenhouse cultivation, and then March towards high quality and high yield according to the characteristics of greenhouse facilities cultivation. Through the research of different fertilization, different densities, different varieties and different pest control, she took the lead in researching the long-season cultivation technology of "Yulin" watermelon in China. Lin Yi's research on "Watermelon Long-season Cultivation Technology with Multi-plastic Film Covering and Full Shelter from Rain" has broken through the technical problems of watermelon long-season cultivation in wet and rainy areas in southern China, and achieved the results of excellent watermelon quality, high yield and long market period.

This set of watermelon cultivation techniques studied by Lin Yi has five innovative highlights: long-season cultivation, early maturity and high yield, high quality, early listing and sparse planting and high yield. "Yulin" watermelons in Wenling can be picked in four to six batches all year round. If it is well managed, it can generally be picked from April to 65438+February. Zaojia watermelon is an early-maturing variety, but its yield per mu has reached more than 4,000 kilograms. Through the whole process of sheltering from rain, the fruit cracking rate is greatly reduced. After adopting this technology, "Yulin" watermelon was listed more than two months earlier than plastic film watermelon. Generally, the density of watermelons cultivated in the open air is 600-800 plants per mu, but only 220-250 plants per mu are needed after adopting the technology of Linyi, so as to achieve high quality, sparse planting and high yield. Due to the popularization of scientific planting technology, the highest planting area of "Yulin" watermelon in Wenling reached 80,000 mu, and now Wenling people are planting watermelons in 15 provinces and cities all over the country, with the planting area exceeding 65,438+10,000 mu. The cultivation technique of Yulin watermelon studied by Lin Yi has improved the cultivation level of watermelon in China and promoted the development of watermelon industry. At present, the cultivation technique of "Yulin" watermelon has been fully applied in Wenling, the hometown of watermelon in greenhouse in China, and it has also been extended to Hainan, Guangdong, Shanghai and other 15 provinces and cities, with a total area of 553,000 mu and an additional benefit of 65.438+0.24 billion yuan.

After the launch of Yulin brand, watermelon has gradually become the pillar industry of Wenling agriculture. However, with the rapid development of watermelon, the continuous cropping obstacle caused by soil-borne diseases is becoming more and more serious, which leads to a sharp decline in watermelon yield and quality. In particular, watermelon retting has become the main factor restricting the sustainable development of watermelon industry in Wenling, and there is a lack of effective measures to solve watermelon retting in China.

In order to solve this problem, Lin Xie led a research group to study the high-yield cultivation techniques of watermelon continuous cropping by screening rootstocks and grafting cultivation techniques that matched watermelon varieties. In order to maintain the original quality of Zaojia watermelon, she chose several rootstock varieties such as Gourd Rootstock 1 and Shentongli for grafting research. Because gourd rootstock 1 is not heat-resistant, how to realize long-season cultivation and how to make grafted watermelon spend the hot summer safely has become a difficult problem for Lin Yi and the technical staff of the research group. After several years' efforts, Lin Yi presided over the completion of the "Study on High-yield Cultivation Techniques of Watermelon Continuous Cropping in Protected Cultivation", which broke through the major technical problem that watermelon cannot be continuously cropped, explored a new way to control the occurrence of watermelon retting, and provided strong technical support for the sustainable development of watermelon planting in Wenling and even inside and outside the province.

At the end of March and the beginning of April, 2005, grafted watermelon seedlings in Xinhe, Songmen and other places along the coast of Wenling appeared large-scale root retting, which was the first time in Zhejiang Province. Watermelon experts can't do anything about it, so Wenling agricultural department invited provincial authoritative experts to identify it, but experts thought there was something wrong with the roots of gourd. Lin Yi disagrees with this conclusion. She believes that it is not the root of gourd, but the problem of pathogenic bacteria. Because three pathogens were detected at that time, she seized the main pathogens for research. She first isolated the pathogenic bacteria and then received them from the good seedlings. After a year of observation and research, she finally found the root of the disease and overturned the expert's conclusion. To this end, in 2005, she set out to establish a project called "Study on the causes and control techniques of grafted watermelon retting". On March 27th, 2006, the grafted watermelon of 12 mu of Guanong Li in Liqiao Village of Ruoheng Town suffered from root rot. Knowing this, he asked Li to control it according to his own research method. As a result, half a month later, Li's grafted watermelon resumed its growth. Lin Yi found a new method to prevent watermelon retting for melon farmers with her unique research results.

For the sweetness of "Yulin" watermelon and the bumper harvest of melon farmers, Lin Yi has been in the front line of agricultural technology extension for 24 years, and has been rated as an advanced worker in agricultural science and technology, a top-notch talent, a female star of scientific and technological invention and an outstanding member of the league by provinces and cities for many times.
