The surname Chen comes from Sun Gonggui and belongs to the ancestral fief.

Zhou Wuwang married his eldest daughter, Tai Ji, to Mann, and prepared three gifts to commemorate Yu Shun. Chen Jiandu (now Huxiang Town, Zhecheng County, Henan Province), known in history, later moved to Wanqiu (now Chengguan District, Huaiyang County, Henan Province), which governs the most of the 14 cities and is roughly a part of eastern Henan and central Anhui.

From the closure to the killing of King Hui of Chu in 479 BC, it took Chen 25 years, which lasted more than 568 years. After Chen's death, the descendant of Chen Gongzi Wan, a branch of Chen Gongzi Wan, took the place of surname in 386 BC, and was called Chen (Tian) in history.

In the pre-Qin period, Chen mainly lived in Henan, Anhui, Hubei and other places. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, Chen had set foot in Hunan, Jiangsu, Shanxi, Shandong and other places.
