The distinctive regional characteristics reflect the influence of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement and the Revolution of 1911. In addition, most of them went out of their hometown, came to Beijing, Shanghai and even went abroad to study, thus accepting Marxism. So Beijing and Shanghai gathered the largest number of people.

Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao and others became spiritual leaders of the New Culture Movement. There are also intellectuals who went abroad to study before the May 4th Movement. The experience of studying abroad made them understand the concept of socialism. The youngest are left-wing young students who grew up during the May 4th Movement, mostly college students in the north. There are also a group of young students from Hunan, represented by Mao Zedong, and students who work and study in France.
