The Tang Priest in The Journey to the West was the righteous brother of Emperor Taizong, and the layman's surname was Chen, his birth name was Xuanzang, and he was the first monk in the Tang Dynasty. He is tall, elegant, kind-hearted and proficient in Buddhist scriptures. So people call it Tang priest. When Emperor Taizong of Li Shimin went west to learn Buddhist scriptures, he gave Sanzang a dharma name.

In the novel, he encountered eighty-one difficulties in learning from the West and never changed his original intention. With the help of the Monkey King, Pig Bajie and Friar Sand, he finally retrieved 35 true scriptures from the western Buddhist Leiyin Temple, which made great contributions to the promotion of Buddhism. The Journey to the West was born in16th century, during Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty in China (1522- 1566), and it has been more than 400 years since then. Author Wu Cheng'en, whose real name is Ruzhong, whose real name is Sheyang Jushi, and The Journey to the West wrote the first draft in Wu Cheng'en's middle age, which was later polished.
