Appendix II: Couplets of Cai's Commercial Allusions

Xue Jia's new originality;

Cai's old name is Gao.

-Anonymous writer's paper shop

The first couplet refers to the chronicle of Xue Tao, a poet in central China. According to Yu Fang Sheng Lan, in the middle Tang Dynasty, "Xue Taohongdu, a prostitute of Shu, used the paper industry to make ten-color small notes, named Xue Taojian, also known as Shu Jian." "Biography of Xue Tao" says: "Tao, overseas Chinese stop at Baihuatan, bow to write crimson notes, cut notes for singing, and entertain sages, which is called Xue Tao Note." 1000 years ago, Xue Tao was not only good at writing poems, but also good at calligraphy. Usually I am very close to literati and poets. In today's words, his cultural quality is very high. She has to deal with paper and ink every day in her life, and her requirements for paper are naturally very clear. She not only requires the paper to be fine and smooth, but also has visual colors and patterns. At that time, most of the papers in Sichuan were rough and monotonous, which was far from meeting the requirements of literati. So Xue Tao considered doing his own excellent thesis. Manual papermaking process is quite complicated, which requires both good papermaking raw materials and good water. Fortunately, Chengdu is rich in raw materials such as bamboo, hemp and hibiscus, as well as Huanhuaxi with excellent water quality. The stream has low iron content, less suspended matter and low hardness, and the paper made is white and smooth. "All the colors used in the paper are bright." Xue Tao first bought a house by Baihuatan in Huanhuaxi, and became a neighbor with the famous poet Du Shaoling. Then hire craftsmen to set up paper mills. The product she designed is a kind of writing paper with suitable length and width. Ten sheets can be used as a couch, which is very convenient to use. According to the principle of dyeing paper with Polygonum cuspidatum leaves, Xue Tao made colored stationery paper with hibiscus as raw material by boiling in water and adding hibiscus flower powder. Xue Tao's prose has ten colors: crimson, pink, apricot, bright yellow, goose yellow, dark blue, light blue, dark green, green and light cloud. Xue Tao also uses the method of brush processing to make colored paper. She extracted dye from safflower, then added glue to make pigment and coated it on paper. Compared with the traditional dip dyeing method, this brush dyeing process saves dyes and reduces the cost. Therefore, Xue Tao is also considered as the founder of coated paper. Xue Taojian invented by Xue Tao left a valuable cultural heritage for the Chinese nation.

The second couplet refers to the chronicle of Cai Lun, the inventor of papermaking in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Cai Lun, the word Zhong Jing. Guiyang (now Chenzhou City, Hunan Province) people. Ming Di Yongping entered the palace as an official in the 18th year (75 years). In the first year of Zhanghe River in the Eastern Han Dynasty (87 years), he was appointed. In the first year of Yuanxing (105), papermaking was invented. Summarizing the experience of predecessors, he began to make paper from bark, hemp head, rags, old fishing nets and other raw materials through beating, ramming, papermaking and baking, saying that Cai Hou's paper made great contributions to the reform and popularization of papermaking, and was later passed down as the inventor of papermaking. Papermaking is one of the four great inventions in ancient China. In the early days of papermaking, rags and bark were the main raw materials for papermaking. At that time, the rags were mainly hemp fibers, and the varieties were mainly ramie and hemp. It is said that cotton in China was introduced from India at the same time as Buddhism in the early Eastern Han Dynasty, so it should be later for textiles. In addition, the bark used at that time was mainly Broussonetia papyrifera, which was once called "Mr Broussonetia papyrifera". As early as 1800 years ago, Cai Lun, the inventor of papermaking, made "Cai Hou Paper" from bark (bark), hemp head (hemp chips), open cloth (rags) and broken fishing nets, and presented it to the Emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty on 105, which was highly praised. The invention of papermaking has made great contributions to the progress of China and the world civilization.
