His graduation thesis is the first one in China to put forward the problem of high-rise steel structure. The thesis was well received by Mao Yisheng, chairman of the defense committee, Professor Cai Fangyin, reviewer, and Soviet experts as tutors. 1956 participated in the pre-qualification of associate doctor of Tianjin University and achieved excellent results. From then on until 1979, he worked as a lecturer, deputy director and acting director in the steel structure teaching and research section of the Department of Civil Engineering of Tianjin University. 1979, promoted to associate professor. In the field of civil engineering, it is well known that Professor Liu Xiliang has the title of "Top Ten First" in China, which shows his sensitivity to science.
(1) 1955, under the guidance of Soviet experts, Liu Xiliang chose the topic of "high-rise steel structure" for his graduation thesis, read a lot of literature and wrote a paper, which was praised by Mr. Mao Yisheng. Although the domestic economic situation at that time did not allow the construction of high-rise buildings with steel structure, it was still very valuable in science and practice to put forward this topic from the development direction. In recent years, high-rise steel structure buildings have appeared in China, and the specifications in this regard have also been issued. However, Liu Xiliang was the first person to write a paper on high-rise steel structures.
② In 1962, Liu Xiliang was the first to successfully design a saddle hyperbolic paraboloid cable roof in my project. Tianjin University Gymnasium is such a suspended cable structure. After the 1976 earthquake, the situation is still serious.
③ 1965, the first welded hollow spherical joint grid structure was successfully developed and applied to the roof of the auditorium of Tianjin Science and Technology Commission. Liu Xiliang read foreign materials in five languages, absorbed advanced foreign experience, combined with the reality of China, overcame all kinds of conservative ideas, risked "white hat", and finally developed it successfully. More than 90% of the new roofs of the 1 1 Asian Games held in China adopted this scientific research achievement. In recent years, under his influence, associations, societies, committees and research centers have been established all over the country to promote the grid structure. ⑥ Liu Xiliang published the first monograph "Design of Flat Grid Structure" in China on 1979, which was published by China Building Industry Press. This monograph, which is also rare abroad, was written by Liu Xiliang in secret during the Cultural Revolution. The final manuscript was published in 1976, and it was three years before it was officially published. This shows how keen Liu Xiliang is on science. The book brings together the development and present situation of grid structure at home and abroad, and also describes the scientific research achievements of Liu Xiliang for many years. At that time, when computers were not popular, the book simplified calculations, methods and charts, which brought convenience to designers. All colleges and universities regard this book as the main reference and basis for compiling lecture notes, guiding graduation design, conducting scientific research, designing by design institutes and compiling grid specifications. 1984, this book was exhibited at the 3rd International Symposium on Space Structure held by the Space Structure Center of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Surrey, UK, and was well received by the participants. Professor Macovschi, director of the research center of the university, said that this is a very valuable monograph.

Professor Liu Xiliang began to recruit graduate students from 1982, and in recent years, he recruited doctoral students. At present, nearly 100 graduate students (including graduate students) are enrolled, and there are as many as 32 students studying at the same time, ranking first in the national spatial grid specialty.
In the field of civil engineering, Professor Liu Xiliang has been at the forefront of scientific research and participated in the design of many large-scale projects. From 65438 to 0958, he participated in the design of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, was responsible for the design of steel beams on the upper part of the bridge, and worked with computers by hand, with remarkable achievements. 1978 participated in the design and research of the gymnasium project of the 8th Asian Games. Liu Xiliang led eight students to participate in this work, conducted theoretical research and model test, and put forward effective construction measures. The research work of this project won the third prize of outstanding scientific research achievements of the State Construction Engineering Administration. In 1989, Liu Xiliang has successfully developed a new type of assembled square-cone grid structure, whose web members can be made of small angle steel and round steel in addition to round pipes, which is simple in construction and saves steel. In addition to physical model experiments, it has also been used in the volleyball hall of Nankai University Sports Center. We are now preparing to promote it vigorously. On the basis of this quadrangular pyramid grid structure, Professor Liu Xiliang further studied and removed the upper and lower chords in the longitudinal direction to form a folded plate grid structure. This new grid structure has been applied in many projects of 10, and has broad development prospects. In view of the irregular circular plane grid, Professor Liu Xiliang presided over the research and successfully developed a spider web grid, which was successfully used in the ticket office in the southwest corner of Tianjin subway after model test, and reached the domestic advanced level after identification. Professor Liu Xiliang has also done a lot of analysis and research on the elastic pseudo-shell method of reticulated shells, and achieved gratifying results, and published articles in domestic magazines and conference proceedings at home and abroad. In recent years, the geometric and physical nonlinear stability of single-layer reticulated shells has been studied, and its theoretical and experimental measurements are difficult. At present, the research work in this field is being vigorously carried out.
