What does Chai Tongzhai mean?
Chai Tongzhai means:

"firewood" is the same as "village", a fence. This is a place name. Chai Lu, a landscape poem written by Wang Wei, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, is full of the realm of painting, which is in sharp contrast with the quietness, emptiness and clear and audible words of an empty mountain. It is an artistic means of combining static and dynamic, expressing the poet's pursuit and love for the ethereal realm in nature, which is also one of his pleasures of seclusion in Wangchuan.

The original text is as follows:

Chai Lu

Don

No one can be seen in the silent valley, only the voice is heard.

The shadow of the sunset shone into the depths of the forest, and the scenery on the moss was pleasant.

Translation:

The mountain was empty and silent. No one could be seen, only people's voices could be heard.

The golden light of the setting sun went straight into the deep forest and shone on the moss in the dark.

The first sentence first describes the empty mountain positively, focusing on the empty mountain and cold mountain; Immediately after the second sentence, the realm suddenly emerged, with local and temporary "sound" to set off the overall and long-term emptiness; The third and fourth sentences describe empty mountains and then deep forests, from sound to color. The language of the whole poem is fresh and natural, and Zen is permeated into the vivid description of natural scenery by using the method of setting off quietness with movement and setting off the overall situation with parts, creating a quiet and profound realm.

This poem embodies the combination of poetry, painting and music. Silent, dark and dark, it is easy for ordinary people to perceive; But silence with sound and darkness with light are less noticed. It is precisely because the poet's unique painter and musician are sensitive to color and sound that he grasped the unique quiet realm at the moment when the voice of the empty mountain man sounded and the deep forest saw the light again. But this sensitivity is inseparable from his careful observation of nature and his focus on silence.
