Subsequently, under the cordial care of Comrade Deng Xiaoping, the State Council approved the establishment of the National Natural Science Foundation Committee in February 1986. The Natural Science Foundation insists on supporting basic research, and gradually forms and develops a funding pattern consisting of three series of research projects, talent projects and environmental conditions projects. In the past twenty years, the Natural Science Foundation has made great achievements in promoting the development of basic research of natural science in China, promoting the construction of basic disciplines, and discovering and cultivating outstanding scientific and technological talents.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (hereinafter referred to as NSFC) issued the "Eleventh Five-Year" development plan of NSFC in 2006 in order to implement the deployment of the national medium-and long-term scientific and technological development plan and accurately grasp the strategic orientation of "supporting basic research, insisting on free exploration and playing a guiding role".
